48. The Divinity of Christ

1 Thee we adore, eternal Word!
The Father's equal Son;
By heaven's obedient hosts adored,
Ere time had yet begun.

2 The first creation has displayed
Thine energy divine;
For not a single thing was made
By other hands than Thine.

3 But ransoned sinners, with delight,
Sublimer facts survey--
The all-creating Word unites
Himself to dust and clay.

4 Creation's Author now assumes
A creature's humble form;
A man of grief and woe becomes,
And trod on like a worm.

5 The Lord of glory bears the shame
To vile transgressors due;
Justice the Prince of life condemns
To die in anguish too.

6 God over all, for ever blessed,
The righteous curse endures;
And thus, to souls with sin distressed,
Eternal bliss insures.

7 What wonders in Thy person meet,
My Savior, all divine!
I fall with rapture at Thy feet,
And would be wholly Thine.
