8153. Awake, Awake, O Israel

1 O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

2 The long expected Savior came
And brought to us His new, fulfillèd law.
Yet many did not hear His Word:
Rejecting Him, they scoffed at our Lord.
Behold! Behold! Our dear Messiah came!
Why did we all so bring Him to shame?

3 The Lamb of God spoke not out of turn:
Though men did hate; His laws they spurned.
Our Jesus hung upon the cross—
His blood was shed for mankind that is lost!
Behold! Behold! The Lamb of God!
Who takes away the sins of the world!

4 But Satan did not win the victory!
For Jesus rose, ascended up on high!
He calleth now for every man
To lay down sin and follow His command.
Awake! Awake! O Israel!
Proclaim to all: Emmanuel.

5 Come forth, ye Gentiles of the east;
Ye Israelites, point now to the feast
For all in the New Jerusalem
That waits for those that have overcome!
Repent! Believe! For Jesus comes again!
Do not delay, but thy knee now bend!

Text Information
First Line: O come, O come, Emmanuel
Title: Awake, Awake, O Israel
Author (vs. 2-5): Rebecca E. Lee (2015)
Language: English
Source: Verse 1, author unknown, possibly 12th Century (Veni, veni Emanuel)
Notes: My maternal grandparents are/were both Jewish, but I only found this out two years ago with my family. My father also has some Hebrew in his background. Ever since then, I have had a great burden for my people, to see them surrender their all to Jesus, and embrace Him for Who He is: Messiah! This song is a cry of my heart. Rebecca Lee, 2015
