AXXXI. The Paradox

1 How strange is the course that a christian must steer,
How perplex'd is the path he must tread;
The hope of his happiness rises from fear,
And his life he receives from the dead.

2 His fairest pretentions must wholly be wav'd
And his best resolutions be cross'd,
Nor can he expect to be perfectly sav'd,
Till he finds himself utterly lost.

3 When this is all done and his heart will assur'd,
Of the total remission of sin,
When his pardon is seal'd and peace is procur'd,
From that moment his conflicts begin.
