468. O God of Unrelenting Grace

1 O God of unrelenting grace,
Whose judgment yet we daily face,
Forgive us now, good Lord.
Thou art so distant and so near;
For Thee we long, yet Thee we fear,
O known, and yet beyond record.

2 We take too light Thy majesty,
Pretending thoughts can compass Thee;
Forgive us now, good Lord.
We seal Thee fast in time and word,
Assured Thy full voice we have heard,
And little mystery Thee accord.

3 For taking light the tasks now ours,
Belittling oft our given powers,
Forgive us now, good Lord.
We sense Thee not in each day’s flow,
And thinking this for Thee too low,
In heaven afar we have Thee stored.

4 For thinking Thee too far from us,
For fearing Thee too close to us,
Forgive us now, good Lord.
Thou dwell’st in high and holy place,
Yet all things touchest by Thy grace,
Through all our lives be Thou adored.
