Further Reflections on Confessions and Statements of Faith References

The call to follow Christ that is expressed in this song, is also expressed very comprehensively in Our World Belongs to God, paragraphs 41-43: “To follow this Lord is to serve him wherever we are without fitting in, light in darkness, salt in a spoiling world.”

Belhar Confession, Section 4, is also explicit in helping us to sense our call to follow Christ who wishes to “bring about justice and true peace among people.”

Musical Suggestion

We often associate drumming with African music, but “Somlandela” comes from an a cappella African tradition. The four voice parts shown on the page are a good starting point. A song leader will help bring the song to the next level, heating the song up with interjections like the one in the first ending. In this style, it is entirely appropriate for the song leader to make up new verses on the spot to fit the occasion. Of course, accompanying the song with a band or drumming is not out of the question either.
— Greg Scheer

Consider the following suggestion for use with children:
  • The Zulu in this song is easy for children to learn as well as English. A leader can lead through the additional verses. Have a discussion about the meaning of this simple song, and let the children suggest additional stanzas. (i.e., In our families…., )
  • If you have a hand drum or djembe, let a rhythmic child play either a steady beat or rhythmic pattern.
