Further Reflections on Confessions and Statements of Faith References

The Catechism says that those who know Christ’s forgiveness are “to thank God for such deliverance” (Heidelberg Catechism, Lord’s Day 1, Question and Answer 2). As a result, “With our whole lives we may show that we are thankful to God for his benefits, so that he may be praised through us, and that we may be assured of our faith by its fruits, and so that by our godly living our neighbors may be won over to Christ” (Heidelberg Catechism, Lord’s Day 32, Question and Answer 86).

O God, great God, good God, lover of sinners, you seek out the lost to find them. You seek out the blind to heal them. O God, great God, good God, we give you thanks for your amazing grace, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Amazing Grace Chant

Hymn Story/Background

Several years ago, Navaho pastor Stanley Jim met with the choir directors at Rehobeth Christian School in New Mexico (www.rcsnm.org/) to tell them of his Navaho chant that could be combined with “Amazing Grace.”  Upon hearing him sing it, Bob Ippel and Gail De Young became excited and arranged it for the choir using the Navajo phrase Ayoo Diiyiin (“God is holy”) which the sopranos and altos sing over the chant.  The sopranos and altos sing the phrase at an open 5th interval, a common structure for Native American music.
