The Nicene Creed 2

Hymn Story/Background

In slight contrast to the Apostles’ Creed (“I believe…”), the Nicene Creed begins with first person plural, “WE believe in one God…”  The short refrain “We believe” highlights the communal nature of this creed by using “we” and “us” repeatedly in only four short musical bars.

The optional vamp offers open chords that connote the harmonies of chant.  These chords can be sounded beneath the reading of the creed. Punctuating the three sections of the creed with the musical affirmation of the chorus can turn a perfunctory recitation of the creed into a simple musical tapestry.
