6. The New Song

1. With harps and with viols, there stand a great throng
In the presence of Jesus, and sing this new song:

Refrain:
Unto Him who hath loved us and washed us from sin,
Unto Him be the glory forever, Amen.

2. All these once were sinners, defiled in his sight,
Now arrayed in pure garments in praise they unite. [Refrain]

3. He maketh the rebel a priest and a king,
He hath bought us and taught us this new song to sing. [Refrain]

4. How helpless and hopeless we sinners had been,
If he never had loved us till cleansed from our sin. [Refrain]

5. Aloud in his praises our voices shall ring,
So that others believing, this new song shall sing. [Refrain]

• Notes: Dr. Pierson was a man known more by his pen than his person. Yet, even those who spent but a small occasion with him never "doubted his honesty, ability, or fidelity to the truth at whatever the cost to himself." A gifted writer, eloquent preacher, talented musician and able artist, his love of home and family lay overshadowed only by his fervent loyalty to the word of God. With heart aflame for souls abroad, Dr. Pierson contended fervently for the "evangelization of the world." Beyond seventy years of age, yet driven by the fervour of his heart, he embarked on a missionary journey-- only to succumb to fatal illness. At his death, family, acquaintance and fellow labourer alike testified of his character, his compassion and his conviction concerning the cause of Christ.
