108. The Same Old Message

1 There’s a message full of promise, full of boundless tenderness,
God in wisdom bade men tell it o’er and o’er, his love to prove,
Unto sin-sick souls all burdened, unto hearts that long for rest,
Till they lean in faith upon the Rock that tempests cannot move.

Refrain:
‘Tis the same old message, the same grand message,
That changed the heathen tribes to nations free!
‘Tis the same old message, the same grand message,
That brings new hope and life to you and me!

2 ‘Tis a message, sacred, holy, of a Savior crucified,
Just repeating o’er the story of his love so great, so true,
Telling out in rev’rent accents how upon the cross he died,
How he bore our sins upon his heart; our grief and sorrow knew. [Refrain]

3 And this old world needs the message, as on each succeeding day,
It longs for the blessed sunlight, as it needs refreshing rain;
As the homeless need a shelter, as the burdened need to pray,
As the thirsty for the water pant, or sick ones rest from pain. [Refrain]

4 Just the simple, oft-told story of the Lamb for sinners slain;
‘Tis a tale of wondrous sweetness, ‘tis a story all sublime;
How he came and lived and suffered, that men might salvation claim,
This glad story full of love is meant for every race and clime. [Refrain]
