I have a copy of Henry Wilder Foote's "American Unitarian Hymn Writers and Hymns", prepared c. 1959 for the Hymn Society. It was "published" in typescript, perhaps mimeographed, without any copyright notice and is therefore in the public domain now. But ... does the Hymn Society have a good electronic-text version of it? (I haven't found it online anywhere yet.)

If not, I propose to run it through Project Gutenberg's Distributed Proofreaders.

I am delighted to know that you have a copy of Foote's work. The Hymn Society office would very much like to have a copy and would be glad to pay for the photocopy and postage to our headquarters. Please contact our office--you can find the address on our website www.thehymnsociety.org I'm not sure that distribution of mimeograph copies constitutes "publication." If it is determined to be an unpublished manuscript, the work is not in the public domain. According to information at Cornell University's Copyright Information Center (http://www.copyright.cornell.edu/resources/publicdomain.cfm)an unpublished work, never registered, is protected for the life of the author plus 70 years. Foote died in in 1964, so that means the copyright protection extends through 2034. I would appreciate the opportunity to consult with you further on this before submitting it to Project Gutenberg. Thanks.

This book is now available for proofreading at Distributed Proofreaders, pgdp.net. When fully proofed, it can be posted at Project Gutenberg, gutenberg.org as well as CCEL.org and Hymnary.com, thus finally accomplishing the author's intent to contribute to the Dictionary of American Hymnology.

As always, proofreaders are welcome; in particular, I'd love to hear from other people who are interested in making important hymnological material widely available online. Between CCEL and PG, almost half of the Amazon / Barnes and Noble e-book catalogs (ignoring vanity press and instrumental performance sheet music) is available freely--but there is plenty more to do.

With the help of some old and some new proofreaders, this project has now completed a full round of proofreading at Distributed Proofreaders; there will be further rounds of proofing that are restricted to proofers with more on-site experience.

I was delighted to see the new participants: and, especially for your hymnological proofing pleasure and edification, there is a new project, Ruth Ellis Messenger's paper on "The Medieval Latin Hymn."

I would really like to see more people interested in hymnology at the site--getting involved in those later rounds of proofing. To that end, please suggest important public-domain(*) books on the subject that should have good electronic texts.

I'm open to important hymnals (text-only) as well as books about any aspect of hymn-writing or -singing. The results will be posted to Project Gutenberg, and cross-posted to CCEL (and the Hymnary itself, if its material fits the hymnary format.)

(*In this context, "public-domain" mostly means "published before 1923", since Project Gutenberg isn't accepting non-renewed books at the moment.)

The Medieval Latin Hymn has completed round 1 proofreading. And American Unitarian Hymn Writers has passed through three proofing passes and is halfway through the final one.

Now available at pgdp.net in proofrading pass 1 (open to anyone interested): "Sacred Hymns from the German, by Frances E. Cox, pioneer translator of German hymns, in this the 200th anniversary of her birth, divided into German and English projects. To follow, the second edition, significantly revised and expanded. (Others of the "brilliant young Victorian women" who translated so much of German piety into English--the Borthwick and Winkworth sisters, Frances Bevan--were already represented at CCEL.)

And after then? Suggestions are welcome.
