Deep and Wide

Most people are familiar with the chorus "Deep and Wide", but I am wondering if anyone out there knows the original hymn? Several years ago we were at a hymn sing, and the older gentleman who was in charge mentioned the fact that the chorus "Deep and Wide" originally came from a hymn, but that it wasn't well-known anymore. He sang it for us, and it was beautiful, but I don't remember anything about the text and haven't been able to find it online anywhere. My guess is that it dated from the early 1900's, but I'm not sure at all. Can anyone help me locate this hymn?
