Tulane University: Howard-Tilton Memorial Library

While there is no single dedicated collection of hymnals at Tulane University, there is a combined total of over 200 volumes held at various library and archival locations across the uptown campus. Each holding location maintains a unique set. The hymnal collection of the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library is particularly strong in early 20th century materials but also includes several titles from the late 19th century. Denominations in the collection include Christian, Christian Science, Lutheran, Pentecostal, Unitarian, and others. Highlights from this collection include Leavitt’s Christian Lyre: A Collection of Hymn Tunes Adapted for Social Worship, Prayer Meetings, and Revivals of Religion (1832), A Collection of Familiar and Original Hymns and Tunes Rendered Scientifically for Christian Science Service (1889), The Scottish Hymnal with Tunes for Use in Churches (1886). The Latin American Library, one of the foremost collections of library books and rare materials of its kind in the world, contains approximately 20 hymnals from the region. Many have facing page translations in Spanish and indigenous languages. The Rare Books division of Special Collections also contains several dozen hymn books from the early 19th through the early 20th centuries. Highlights from their collections include Chahta Vba Isht Taloa Holisso (Choctaw Hymn Book) (1872), Hommel’s Christenlust in Liedern: Bevortwortet (1861), Hymn Book: Being a Collection of Hymns designed to Supersede all Others Hitherto Made Use of in that Church (1872).
