Page scans for Missionary Hymnal

I added page scans for the 1906 Missionary Hymnal from the scanned version at Internet Archive. This is in part an test to see how it adding page scans from IA goes.

Summary: it works! It took some messing around for me to figure out how to get the images out of Internet Archive, how to convert them to a usable format, upload, etc. However, it can be done and it probably only takes an hour or two for a typical hymnal. There are hundreds more scanned hymnals at Internet Archive -- anyone interested in giving it a try?

Here's the method I ended up using. Note that to do this you have to be authorized as an editor and you have to be logged in. If you would like to learn more about becoming an authorized editor, contact us.

  1. First make sure the hymnal has been renumbered to match the numbers of the scanned version you want to upload. To renumber a hymnal click the "Arrange this hymnal" link under "Editor Tools."
  2. While you are at it, make sure that all the hymns that are supposed to be in the hymnal are present. Sometimes you'll find that a couple of hymns are missing. If any are missing, add them with the "Add new: Hymn text instance" link.
  3. At the Internet Archive page for a hymnal, click the "HTTP" link and download the .jp2.zip file.
  4. Convert the images to png format using the Windows app IrfanView. While the files are unpacked, take a note of how many page images there are before page 1. Then zip up the files again.
  5. Find the corresponding hymnal at Hymnary.org and click the "upload page images" link under "Editor Tools".
  6. The upload could take several minutes. After it completes, you'll be given an opportunity to connect page scans to the appropriate hymns.
