Richard Allen (February 14, 1760 – March 26, 1831) was a minister, educator and writer, and the founder in 1816 of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME), the first independent black denomination in the United States. In 1801 he published the first hymnal specifically intended for, and reflective of the tastes of, predominantly African-American churches in the United States.
