Representative Text

1 Our God is love; and all his saints
His image bear below:
The heart with love to God inspired,
With love to man will glow,
With love to man will glow.

2 None who are truly born of God
Can live at enmity;
Then may we love each other, Lord,
As we are loved by thee,
As we are loved by thee.

3 Heirs of the same immortal bliss,
Our hopes and fears the same,
The bonds of love our hearts unite,
With mutual love inflame,
With mutual love inflame.

4 So may the unbelieving world
See how true Christians love;
And glorify our Savior's grace,
And seek that grace to prove,
And seek that grace to prove.

Notes

Our God is love: and all His saints. [Brotherly Love.] We have not been able to trace this hymn beyond Cotterill’s Selection, 1819, No. 129, where it is given in 4 stanzas of 4 lines, and headed,”For Christian Love.” It is not by Cotterill, and although sometimes attributed to Wilkinson, its authorship is unknown. It is in somewhat extensive use.

LAMBETH (Schulthes)

Credited to Wilhelm Schulthes, 1871, in The Hymnal (1916). Reviews of his works in The Musical Times in 1871 include an "Ave Maria" for organ/piano and "O Salutaris" for soprano and choir. These pieces appear to be exceptionally rare and are not readily available for study. —Chris Fenner
