Nathaniel D. Gould

1781 - 1864 Person Name: N. G. Gould Composer of "WOODLAND" in The Primitive Methodist Church Hymnal Nathaniel Duren Gould 1781-1864. Born in Bedford, MA, into the Duren family, He was musically inclined and attended a singing school when young. He was also a master and teacher of penmanship and engraving. As a conservative music reformer he opened a singing school in 1799. He taught mostly Psalmody singing. He married Sally Andrews Prichard in 1801, and they had eight children: Nathaniel, Augustus, Charles, Mary Ann, (2 unnamed infants that died), Elizabeth and Sarah. He also formed the New Ipswitch military band in 1804 He was conductor of the Middlesex MA Musical Society in 1805. He took the name Gould in 1806 to qualify for an inheritance from an uncle. He taught music in NH and MA in some 115 singing schools over 50+ years and had more than 50,000 students. He also compiled and published music. He authored a number of books, one being “History of church music in America” (1853) about early singing schools. He noted traits and temperaments of many singers, some not really performing for the glory of God. He died in Boston, MA. John Perry

1851 - 1922 Person Name: M. B. Foster (1851- ) Composer of "ETERNAL LIGHT" in Hymns of Worship and Service Born: November 29, 1851, London, England. Died: December 18, 1922, London, England. Son of an artist, Foster attended Brighton and Guildford Grammar School and entered the stock exchange. He subsequently enrolled at the Royal Academy of Music and played the organ at St. James Church, Marylebone, and St. George’s, Campden Hill. From 1880-92 he was organist at the Foundling Hospital and at Her Majesty’s Theatre, and was choirmaster of St. James, Holborn. He composed children’s cantatas and much church music. 1840 - 1909 Person Name: C. W. Jordan, 1840-1909 Composer of "GEORGIA" in The Methodist Hymn-Book with Tunes Born: January 27, 1841, Bristol, Gloucester, England. Died: August 30, 1909, Hayward’s Heath, Sussex, England. Cremated: Golders Green, London, England. Jordan began his musical career as a chorister, first at Bristol Cathedral and later at St. Paul’s Cathedral. He was educated at Oxford (BMus 1869), and received the Lambeth degree of Doctor of Music in 1886. A champion of plainsong, he was an honorary organist of the London Gregorian Association, where he took a prominent part in the annual festivals at St. Paul’s Cathedral. He was a professor of organ and harmony at the Guildhall School of Music, and an honorary fellow, examiner and treasurer of the Royal College of Organists. Jordan held organist positions at St. Paul’s, Bunhill Row (1857); St. Luke’s Holloway (1860); and from 1866 until his death at St. Stephen’s Church, Lewisham (where he was also choir master).
