God's Holy Spirit Came

Author: Mary Jackson Cathey; Michael Denham Meter: 6.6.8.4 D Appears in 3 hymnals Matching Instances: 3 First Line: God's Holy Spirit came with rushing wind and fire Lyrics: God's Holy Spirit came with rushing wind and fire, Christ's presence here to comfort, bless and to inspire. The Spirit thus began God's holy work on earth at Pentecost, a gift that gave the Church its birth. God sent the Spirit forth fulfilling prophets' word, to those who followed Jesus and who called him Lord. Disciples gathered near the temple courts in prayer. The Spirit blew and rested on those clustered there. God's Spirit filled each one as Jesus had foretold. In many tongues they spoke God's word, renewed and bold. "Repent and be baptized," preached Peter in that hour, and thousands came believing by the Spirit's power. God's church alive today continues to proclaim salvation by the Spirit's power in Jesus' name. Let all believers now their tongues and lives employ. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, our highest joy! Used With Tune: LEONI

The Living God Be Praised

Author: Max Landsberg; Daniel ben Judah; Newton Mann Meter: 6.6.8.4 D Appears in 4 hymnals Matching Instances: 2 Lyrics: 1 The living God be praised, who reigns enthroned above, ancient of everlasting days, and God of love. Jehovah, great I Am! By earth and heaven confessed, we bow before your holy name, forever blest. 2 Your spirit still flows free, high surging where it will: in prophet's word you spoke of old and you speak still. Established is your law, and changeless it shall stand, inscribed upon the human heart, on sea, on land. 3 You have eternal life implanted in the soul; your love shall be our strength and stay, while ages roll. We praise you, living God! We praise your holy name; the first, the last, beyond all thought, and still the same. Another Son is Killed

Author: Carolyn Winfrey Gillette Meter: 6.6.8.4 D Appears in 2 hymnals Matching Instances: 2 Lyrics: Another son is killed, Another daughter dies, And loving, waiting homes are filled With loved ones’ cries. As rivers never sleep, So wars flow on and on. Hang up your harps, sit down and weep For those now gone! We grieve for children lost, For hearts too sad to pray; We mourn, O Lord, the growing cost Of hatred’s way. And sure as threats increase And anger turns to war, We pray that we may find a peace Worth struggling for. We know your way, O Lord, For all your people here: A plowshare from a fighting sword, A transformed spear! Now comfort those who grieve, Be in each saddened home, And by your grace may we believe— And seek Shalom. Topics: Justice; Lament; Peacemaking Scripture: Isaiah 2:4 Used With Tune: LEONI

We Turn to Christ Anew

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) Meter: 6.6.8.4 D Appears in 3 hymnals Matching Instances: 2 Lyrics: 1 We turn to Christ anew who hear his call today, his way to walk, his will pursue, his word obey. To serve him as our king and of his kingdom learn, from sin and ev'ry evil thing to hm we turn. 2 We trust in Christ to save; in him new life begins: who by his cross a ransom gave from all our sins. Our spirit's strength and stay who when all flesh is dust will keep us in that final day, in him we trust. 3 We would be true to him till earthly journeys end, whose love no passing years can dim, our changeless friend. May we who bear his name our faith and love renew, to follow Christ our single aim, and find him true.
