He That Hath Made His Refuge God

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 112 hymnals Lyrics: 1. He that hath made his refuge God Shall find a most secure abode, Shall walk all day beneath His shade, And there at night shall rest his head. 2. Then will I say, My God, Thy power Shall be my fortress and my tower; I, that am formed of feeble dust, Make Thine almighty arm my trust. 3. Thrice happy man! Thy Maker’s care Shall keep thee from the fowler’s snare; Satan, the fowler, who betrays Unguarded souls a thousand ways. 4. Just as a hen protects her brood From birds of prey that seek their blood, Under her feathers, so the Lord Makes His own arm His people’s guard. 5. If burning beams of noon conspire To dart a pestilential fire, God is their life; His wings are spread To shield them with a healthful shade. 6. If vapors with malignant breath Rise thick, and scatter midnight death, Israel is safe; the poisoned air Grows pure, if Israel’s God be there. 7. What though a thousand at thy side, At thy right hand ten thousand died, Thy God His chosen people saves Amongst the dead, amidst the graves. 8. So when He sent His angel down To make His wrath in Egypt known, And slew their sons, His careful eye Passed all the doors of Jacob by. 9. But if the fire, or plague, or sword, Receive commission from the Lord To strike His saints among the rest, Their very pains and deaths are blest. 10. The sword, the pestilence, or fire, Shall but fulfill their best desire; From sins and sorrows set them free, And bring Thy children, Lord, to Thee. Used With Tune: ST. JOHN'S HIGHLANDS Text Sources: The Psalms of David, 1719

Jesus, from Whom All Blessings Flow

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 102 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Jesus, from whom all blessings flow, Great Builder of Thy church below, If now Thy Spirit moves my breast, Hear, and fulfill Thine own request! 2. The few that truly call Thee Lord, And wait Thy sanctifying word, And Thee their utmost Savior own, Unite, and perfect them in one. 3. O let them all Thy mind express, Stand forth Thy chosen witnesses, Thy power unto salvation show, And perfect holiness below! 4. In them let all mankind behold How Christians lived in days of old, Mighty their envious foes to move, A proverb of reproach—and love. 5. From every sinful wrinkle free, Redeemed from all iniquity, The fellowship of saints make known; And, O my God, might I be one! 6. O might my lot be cast with these, The least of Jesu’s witnesses! O that my Lord would count me meet To wash His dear disciples’ feet! 7. This only thing do I require: Thou knowest ’tis all my heart’s desire Freely what I receive to give, The servant of Thy church to live; 8. After my lowly Lord to go, And wait upon Thy saints below; Enjoy the grace to angels given, And serve the royal heirs of Heaven. 9. Lord, if I now Thy drawings feel, And ask according to Thy will, Confirm the prayer, the seal impart, And speak the answer to my heart. Used With Tune: ST. JOHN'S HIGHLANDS Text Sources: Earnest Appeal to Men of Reason and Religion, 1743
