O Living Bread from Heaven

Author: Johann Rist; Miss Catherine Winkworth Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 34 hymnals Lyrics: 1 O Living Bread from heaven, How hast Thou fed Thy guest! The gifts Thou now hast given Have filled my heart with rest. O wondrous food of blessing, O cup that heals our woes! My heart, this gift professing, In thankful songs o'erflows. 2 My Lord, Thou here hast led me Within Thy temple's holiest place, And there Thyself hast fed me With treasures of Thy grace; And Thou hast freely given What earth could never buy, The Bread of Life from heaven, That now I shall not die! 3 Thou givest all I wanted; Let praise my tongue employ, For Thou hast freely granted The Cup of endless joy. Ah, Lord, I do not merit The favor thou hast shown, With all my soul and spirit I bow before Thy throne. 4 Lord, grant me that, thus strengthened With heavenly food, while here, My course on earth be lengthened, I serve with holy fear: And when Thou call'st my spirit To leave this world below, I enter, through Thy merit, Where joys unmingled flow. Amen. Topics: The Means of Grace The Lord's Supper; Names and Office of Christ Bread Used With Tune: HERZLICH THUT MICH VERLANGEN

O how shall I receive Thee

Meter: 7.6 Appears in 94 hymnals Lyrics: 1 O how shall I receive Thee, How greet Thee, Lord, aright? All nations long to see Thee, My hope, my heart's delight! O kindle, Lord, most holy, Thy lamp within my breast, To do in spirit lowly All that may please Thee best. 2 Thy Zion palms is strewing, And branches fresh and fair; My heart, its powers renewing, An anthem shall prepare. My soul puts off her sadness Thy glories to proclaim: With all her strength and gladness She fain would serve Thy name. 3 I lay in fetters groaning; Thou comest to set me free! I stood, my shame bemoaning, Thou comest to honor me; A glory Thou dost give me, A treasure safe on high, That will not fail nor leave me, As earthly riches fly. 4 Love caused Thy incarnation, Love brought Thee down to me. Thy thirst for my salvation Procured my liberty. O love beyond all telling, That led Thee to embrace, In love all love excelling, Our lost and fallen race! 5 Rejoice then, ye sad-hearted, Who sit in deepest gloom, Who mourn o'er joys departed, And tremble at your doom: He who alone can cheer you, Is standing at the door; In pity He is near you, And bids you weep no more. 6 Ye who, with guilty terror, Are trembling, fear no more; With love and grace the Saviour Shall you to hope restore. He comes to heal the spirit That mourneth, sin-oppressed, He comes, that we inherit Eternal joy and rest. 7 He comes to judge the nations, A terror to His foes, A light of consolations And blessed hope to those Who love the Lord's appearing: O glorious Sun, now come, Send forth Thy beams so cheering And guide us safely home! O sacred head, sore wounded

Author: Paul Gerhardt, 1607-76; Robert Bridges, 1844-1930 Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Appears in 23 hymnals Lyrics: 1 O sacred head, sore wounded, Defiled and put to scorn; O kingly head, surrounded With mocking crown of thorn: What sorrow mars thy grandeur? Can death thy bloom deflower? O countenance whose splendour The hosts of heaven adore. 2 *Thy beauty, long-desirèd, Hath vanished from our sight; Thy power is all expirèd, And quenched the light of light. Ah me! for whom thou diest, Hide not so far thy grace: Show me, O Love most highest, The brightness of thy face. 3 *I pray thee, Jesus, own me, Me, Shepherd good, for thine; Who to thy fold hast won me, And fed with truth divine. Me guilty, me refuse not, Incline thy face to me, This comfort that I lose not, On earth to comfort thee. 4 In thy most bitter passion My heart to share doth cry, With thee for my salvation Upon the Cross to die. Ah, keep my heart thus movèd To stand thy Cross beneath, To mourn thee, well-belovèd, Yet thank thee for thy death. 5 My days are few, O fail not, With thine immortal power, To hold me that I quail not In death's most fearful hour: That I may fight befriended, And see in my last strife To me thine arms extended Upon the Cross of life. A Pilgrim and a Stranger

Author: Paul Gerhardt; Jane Borthwick Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 66 hymnals Lyrics: 1 A pilgrim and a stranger, I journey here below; Far distant is my country, The home to which I go. Here I must toil and travail, Oft weary and opprest, But there my God shall lead me To everlasting rest. 2 I've met with storms and danger E'en from my early years, With enemies and conflicts, With fightings and with fears. There's nothing here that tempts me To wish a longer stay, So I must hasten forward, No halting or delay. 3 It is a well-worn pathway; A host has gone before, The holy saints and prophets, The patriarchs of yore. They trod the toilsome journey In patience and in faith; And them I fain would follow, Like them in life and death. 4 Who would share Abraham's blessing Must Abraham's path pursue, A stranger and a pilgrim, Like him, must journey thro'. The foes must be encountered, The dangers must be passed; A faithful soldier only Receives the crown at last. 5 So I must hasten forward-- Thank God, the end will come! This land of passing shadows Is not my destined home. That evermore abideth, The everlasting city, Jerusalem above, This evermore abideth, The home of light and love. 6 There still my thoughts are dwelling, 'Tis there I long to be; Come, Lord, and call Thy servant To blessedness with Thee. Come, bid my toils be ended, Let all my wand'rings cease; Call from the wayside lodging To Thy sweet home of peace. 7 There I shall dwell forever, No more a parting guest, With all Thy blood-bought children In everlasting rest, The pilgrim toils forgotten, The pilgrim conflicts o'er, All earthly griefs behind me, Eternal joys before. Amen. Topics: The Last Things Death and Burial Scripture: Psalm 89:12 Used With Tune: HERZLICH TUT MICH

We come as guests invited

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith (born 1926) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 15 hymnals Lyrics: 1 We come as guests invited when Jesus bids us dine, his friends on earth united to share the bread and wine; the bread of life is broken, the wine is freely poured for us, in solemn token of Christ our dying Lord. 2 We eat and drink, receiving from Christ the grace we need, and in our hearts believing on him by faith we feed; with wonder and thanksgiving for love that knows no end, we find in Jesus living our ever-present friend. 3 One bread is ours for sharing, one single fruitful vine, our fellowship declaring renewed in bread and wine — renewed, sustained and given by token, sign and word, the pledge and seal of heaven, the love of Christ our Lord.
