We Gather Together

Author: Theodore Baker, 1851-1934 Meter: 12.11.12.11 Appears in 200 hymnals Scripture: Hebrews 12:6 First Line: We gather together to ask the Lord's blessing Lyrics: 1 We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing; he chastens and hastens his will to make known; the wicked oppressing now cease from distressing, sing praises to his name: he forgets not his own. 2 Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining, ordaining, maintaining his kingdom divine; so from the beginning the fight we were winning: thou, Lord, wast at our side, all glory be thine! 3 We all do extol thee, our leader triumphant, and pray that thou still our defender wilt be; let thy congregation escape tribulation: thy name be ever praised! God, we praise you. God we bless you.

Author: Christopher Martin Idle (b. 1938) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 30 hymnals Scripture: Hebrews 12:2 Lyrics: 1 God, we praise you. God, we bless you. God, we name you sovereign Lord. Mighty King whom angels worship, Father, by your church adored: all creation shows your glory, heaven and earth draw near your throne singing 'Holy, holy, holy, Lord of hosts, and God alone!' 2 True apostles, faithful prophets, saints who set their world ablaze, martyrs, once unknown, unheeded, join one growing song of praise, while your church on earth confesses one majestic Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, God, our hope eternally. 3 Jesus Christ, the king of glory, everlasting Son of God, humble was your virgin mother, hard the lonely path you trod: by your cross is sin defeated, hell confronted face to face, heaven opened to believers, sinners justified by grace. 4 Christ, at God's right hand victorious, you will judge the world you made; Lord, in mercy help your servants for whose freedom you have paid: raise us up from dust to glory, guard us from all sin today; King enthroned above all praises, save your people, God, we pray. Rejoice in God's Saints

Author: Fred Pratt Green, b. 1930 Meter: 10.10.11.11 Appears in 19 hymnals Scripture: Hebrews 12:1-2 First Line: Rejoice in God's saints today and all days Lyrics: 1 Rejoice in God's saints, today and all days; A world without saints forgets how to praise. Their faith in acquiring the habit of prayer, their depth of adoring, Lord, help us to share. 2 Some march with events to turn them God's way; some need to withdraw, the better to pray; some carry the gospel through fire and through flood: our world is their parish: their purpose is God. 3 Rejoice in those saints, unpraised and unknown, who bear someone's cross, or shoulder their own: they shame our complaining, our comforts, our cares: what patience in caring, what courage is theirs! 4 Rejoice in God's saints, today and all days; a world without saints forgets how to praise. in loving, in living, they prove it is true: The way of self-giving, Lord, leads us to you. Heb. 12:1-13: Behold what witnesses unseen

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 16 hymnals Scripture: Hebrews 12:1-13 First Line: Behold what witnesses unseen Lyrics: Behold what witnesses unseen encompass us around; Men, once like us, with suff’ring tried, but now with glory crowned. Let us, with zeal like theirs inspired, begin the Christian race, And, freed from each encumb’ring weight, their holy footsteps trace. Behold a witness nobler still, who trod affliction’s path, Jesus, at once the finisher and author of our faith. He for the joy before him set, so gen’rous was his love, Endured the cross, despised the shame, and now he reigns above. If he the scorn of wicked men with patience did sustain, Becomes it those for whom he died to murmur or complain? Have ye like him to blood, to death, the cause of truth maintained? And is your heav’nly Father’s voice forgotten or disdained? 147 My son, saith he, with patient mind endure the chast’ning rod; Believe, when by afflictions tried, that thou art loved by God. His children thus most dear to him their heav’nly Father trains, Through all the hard experience led of sorrows and of pains. We know he owns us for his sons, when we correction share; Nor wander as a bastard race, without our Father’s care. A father’s voice with rev’rence we on earth have often heard; The Father of our spirits now demands the same regard. Parents may err; but he is wise, nor lifts the rod in vain His chast’nings serve to cure the soul by salutary pain. Affliction, when it spreads around, may seem a field of woe; Yet there, at last, the happy fruits of righteousness shall grow. Then let our hearts no more despond, our hands be weak no more; Still let us trust our Father’s love, his wisdom still adore.

Christ the Lord is Risen Today

Author: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 1,176 hymnals Scripture: Hebrews 12:2 Lyrics: 1 'Christ the Lord is risen today', all on earth and angels say; raise your joys and triumphs high; sing, ye heavens, and earth reply. Love's redeeming work is done, fought the fight, the battle won; lo! our Sun's eclipse is o'er; lo! he sets in blood no more. 2 Vain the stone, the watch, the seal; Christ has burst the gates of hell: death in vain forbids his rise; Christ has opened Paradise. Lives again our glorious King; where, O Death, is now thy sting? Once he died, our souls to save; where thy victory, O grave? 3 Soar we now where Christ has led, following our exalted Head; made like him, like him we rise; ours the cross, the grave, the skies. Hail, the Lord of earth and heaven! Praise to thee by both be given; thee we greet triumphant now; hail, the Resurrection thou! Let saints below in concert sing

Author: C. Wesley Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 175 hymnals Scripture: Hebrews 12:18-25 Lyrics: 1 Let saints below in concert sing With those to glory gone; For all the servants of our King In earth and heaven are one. 2 One family--we dwell with him-- One church above, beneath, Though now divided by the stream, The narrow stream of death: 3 One army of the living God, To his command we bow; Part of the host have crossed the flood, And part are crossing now. 4 E'en now to their eternal home Some happy spirits fly; And we are to the margin come, And soon expect to die. 5 E'en now, by faith, we join our hands With those that went before, And greet the ransomed blessed bands Upon th' eternal shore. 6 Lord Jesus! be our constant guide; And, when the word is given, Bid death's cold flood its waves divide, And land us safe in heaven.
