Hymnal: The Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs of the Old and New-Testament #PLXXXVIa (1742) Scripture: Psalm 86 First Line: Bow down, O Lord, thine ear Lyrics: 1 Bow down O Lord thine ear, Hear me attentively: For I am poor afflicted sore, And needy too am I. 2 In safety keep my soul For merciful am I: My God save thou thy servant now, That doth on thee rely. 3 Jehovah merciful O be thou unto me; Because that I aloud do cry Thro' all the day to thee. 4 O make thy servant's soul That it may joyful be? Because that I, O Lord on high Do lift my soul to thee. 5 For thou O Lord art good, To pardon prone also: And to them all on thee that call In mercy rich art thou. 6 Jehovah to thine ear, O let my prayer have place, Attend unto the voice also Of my request for grace. 7 I'th day of my distress To thee I will complain: Because that thou wilt me unto An answer give again. 8 Among the gods O Lord, Like thee not any be; And no works are that may compare With those perform'd by thee. [2] 9 The nations all O Lord, Whom thou hast made the same Shall come adore ev'n thee before And glorify thy name. 10 Because thou mighty art, The things that thou hast done They wondrous are, and do declare That thou art God alone. 11 Teach me thy way O Lord, Walk in thy truth will I: Thine holy name to fear the same Mine heart in union tie. 12 With all mine heart I will O Lord my God, thee praise. And also I will glorify Thine holy name always. 13 Because that unto me Thy mercy doth excell; My soul set free hath been by thee, Ev'n from the lowest hell. 14 O God, the violent troops And proud against me rise: My soul seek they to take away, Nor have thee in their eyes. 15 But Lord, a tender God Thou art and gracious. Lon suff'ring too, in mercy thou, And truth art plenteous. 16 O turn to me thy face, And on me mercy have: Thy strength give thou thy servant now, Thy handmaid's son O save. 17 Show me a sign for good; And let my haters see? To my Complaint thine Ear incline

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #LXXXVI (1767) Scripture: Psalm 86 Lyrics: 1 To my Complaint thine Ear incline, O GOD, for no Relief but thine, Can free me from Distress; And all my Wrongs redress: Thy Servant keep, O LORD, for I On thee alone for Help rely: Do thou my Soul restore, That does thy Name adore. 2 Comfort thy Servant; for to thee, For Succour, LORD, I daily flee, To me thy Love extend; For I on thee depend: Thy Goodness, LORD, from Day to Day, To all Mankind thou dost display; And thou wilt pardon too, Those who for Mercy sue. 3 To my repeated humble Pray'r, Bow down, O GOD, thy gracious Ear; Do thou attentive be, For still I call on thee; Among the Gods none can display Such Pow'r; as much inferior they, As are their Works to thine, O LORD, alone Divine! 4 The Nations therefore shall restore Thy Praise, O LORD! thy Name adore, And at the Footstool fall Of him who made them all. They shall confess thee GOD supreme, Thy wond'rous Works shall be their Theme, Shall see what thou hast done, And own thee GOD alone. Part II 11 Teach me, O LORD, thy sacred Way, That from thy Truth I may not stray: To me thy Grace impart, Unite my wand'ring Heart To fear, continually thy Name. Thy Praise, my GOD, I will proclaim, And with a Soul sincere Thee constantly revere. 6 Thy boundless Mercy who can tell, For thou hast sav'd my Soul from Hell, And when I call'd on thee, Thy Goodness set me free: The Sons of Pride against me rise, Not setting thee before their Eyes; And with a wicked Strife, Seek to destroy my Life. 7 But thou didst thy Assistance bring, Of Truth thou everlasting Spring; Thy Patience and thy Love, LORD, thou shalt ne'er remove: Turn thee, O GOD, some Signal show, And let all those who hate me, know, That thou wilt Pow'r extend, Thy Servants to defend. To thee, good God, in my distress I plead

Hymnal: New Version of the Psalms of David #LXXXVI (1756) Scripture: Psalm 86 Lyrics: 1 Tothee, good God, in my distress I plead, Benign O hear me; hasten to my aid; 2 To my too just complaints propitious be, And save the pious soul that trusts in thee. 3 From morn to even heavily I sigh, And shall I vainly on my God rely? 4 On thee my soul depends in her distress; O yet with thy enliv'ning presence bless. 5 For good art thou, and ready to forgive; Who call on thee sincere, in thee shall live. 6 O hear attentive, while to thee I sue; My suffering innocence with pity view; 7 Thee in my deep affliction I invoke; For thee in trying times I've prov'd my rock. 8 Not one among the fancied gods like thee; Not one can mate thy pow'r, thy majesty. 9 The nations all shall glorify thy name, And hail almighty pow'r with loud acclaim; 10 For great art thou; the wonders thou hast done Declare to all, that thou art God alone. 11 Teach me to thy blest dome, th' unerring road; Compose my soul, that me may praise her God. 12 Thee shall me praise, and thee shall she adore, Thy name, thy pow'r, extol, till time's no more, 13 To her from thee continual blssings flow; And oft thou'st sav'd her from the depths below. 14 When men of violence against me rose, When all the villain-rout commenc'd my foes; When with invet'rate hate my life they sought, And set thy dread omnipotence at nought: 15 'Twas then, compassionate, thou didst relieve, Didst to my anguish'd heart sweet solace give. 16 O still, while now my cruel foes invade, Thy servant strengthen with thy mighty aid; 17 That they with wonder and with shame may see, I still have got a pow'rful friend in thee; That from thy clemency, success I have; That thou thy chosen shepherd still wilt save. My Savior whose infinite grace

Author: A. L. Waring Hymnal: Hymns and Meditations #12 (1873) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: Psalm 86:5 Lyrics: My Savior whose infinite grace Most kindly encompasses me, Whose goodness more brightly I trace, The more of my life that I see. — The sins that I mournfully own, Thy meekness and mercy exalt, — And sweet is the voice from Thy throne, That tenderly shows me a fault. Even now, while my praises arise, A sorrowful spirit is mine; A spirit Thou wilt not despise, For O! it is mourning with Thine. My joy is in light from above, The light which Thy kindness displays; My grief is for lack of the love That would tune my whole life to Thy praise. My faithful Redeemer, forgive The sin it has grieved Thee to see, And let me remember to live In the Spirit that glorifies Thee. Though much in Thy child Thou hast borne, Thy counsels still gently repeat, And give me, if still I must mourn, To mourn as a child at thy feet. Languages: English
