b. 1832 Person Name: Mrs. S. Anna Gordon Author of "Ring the Glad Bells" in Joy Bells Mrs. S. Anna Gordon was born in Claremont, Mass., 9 January 1832. She was a physician and author. At an early age she moved to New York with her parents. Before her marriage she was a teacher. She was in charge of the ladies' department in Rock River Seminary and in Ripon College and was active in opening a normal school. She was married in Wisconsin in 1858 to W. A. Gordon M. D. After her marriage she studied medicine with her husband. She assisted him in his practice. In 1859 and 1860 they were connected with the Smithsonian Institute, taking meteorological motes. For one year she was associate editor of "Central Wisconsin." She joined her husband while he was stationed in Louisville, Ky. during the Civil War where she assisted with caring for wounded and sick soldiers. During that time, she also studied art. She was a weekly contributor to the literary columns of the Louisville "Sunday Journal." In 1882 and 1883 she was State editor of the Missouri Woman's Christian Temperance Union on the Chicago "Signal." During her residence in Denver, Col. she was assistant superintendent of Chines work in that city. She is author of the book Camping in Colorado and several papers and poems. Los Angeles, CA, 1933) wrote both text and tune in 1956 for the Radio Choir of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Chicago, Illinois, where he served as minister of music. The hymn was published as a gospel anthem by Manna Music III, 1963. Goodson received his education at the University of California in Los Angeles and served Baptist churches in the Los Angeles area as well as the Fellowship Baptist Church in Chicago. 1817 - 1889 Person Name: Elizabeth A. Godwin, 1817-1889 Author of "My Savior, 'Mid Life's Varied Scene" in The Cyber Hymnal Godwin, Elizabeth Ayton, née Etheridge, daugher of William Ellis Etheridge, was born at Thorpe Hamlet, Norfolk, July 4, 1817; married in 1849 to Mr. C. Godwin, and died at Stoke Bishop in 1889. She published Songs for the Weary, 1865; and Songs amidst Daily Life. Her hymn in common use is "My Saviour, 'mid life's varied scene" (Lent), written whilst yet a girl, and first printed in the Evangelical Magazine, and then in Songs for the Weary, 1873. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907)

William Goode

1762 - 1816 Author of "Crown his head with endless blessing" in The Hymnal Goode, William, M.A., born in Buckingham, April 2, 1762, and received his early education, first in that town, and then under the care of the Rev. T. Bull, a Dissenting minister, at Newport Pagnel. Having a strong inclination for Holy Orders, he left the business in which he was engaged with his father, and, in 1780, entered Magdalen Hall, Oxford, where he graduated B.A. in 1784, and M.A., 1787. On taking Holy Orders in 1786, he became curate of Abbots Langley, Herts; then of St. Ann's, Blackfriars, and subsequently rector of the latter parish, adding thereto one or two lectureships. He died April 15, 1816. Mr. Goode's interest in foreign mission work was very earnest, and took a practical turn in assisting to found the Church Missionary Society. His prose works include Sermons, 1812 ; and Essays on all the Scriptural Names and Titles of Christ, &c, which were reprinted from the Christian Guardian, 1813-1816. His Works, together with a Memoir, were published in 1822 (6 vols.), and edited by his son. His version of the Psalms was published as:— An Entire New Version of the Book of Psalms in which an attempt is made to accommodate them to the worship of the Christian Church, in a variety of measures now in general use, with original Preface and Notes, critical and explanatory, By the Rev. William Goode, M.A., Rector of St. Andrew, Wardrobe, and St. Ann, Blackfriars; Lecturer of St. John of Wapping; and Lady Camden's Tuesday Evening Lecturer at the Church of St. Lawrance, Jewry. In two volumes. London: Printed for the Author by W. Wilson . . . and sold by Rivingtons, &c, 1811. 2nd ed., 1813; 3rd ed., 1816. Pratt, in 1829; Bickersteth, in 1833; and Kemble in 1853, made extensive use of this version of the Psalms, the latter including nearly fifty pieces in his Collection. Most of these have fallen out of Use, one only being retained in Kemble's New Church Hymn Book, 1873. In modern hymnals in Great Britain and America about twenty of Goode's versions are still in common use. These include,"Jesus, with Thy salvation blest"; "Lord, I delight to find my place"; "Thou gracious God and kind"; "With songs of grateful praise," &c. The following are still in common use:— 1. Nathaniel D. Gould

1781 - 1864 Person Name: N. D. Gould Composer of "WOODLAND" in Christ in Song Nathaniel Duren Gould 1781-1864. Born in Bedford, MA, into the Duren family, He was musically inclined and attended a singing school when young. He was also a master and teacher of penmanship and engraving. As a conservative music reformer he opened a singing school in 1799. He taught mostly Psalmody singing. He married Sally Andrews Prichard in 1801, and they had eight children: Nathaniel, Augustus, Charles, Mary Ann, (2 unnamed infants that died), Elizabeth and Sarah. He also formed the New Ipswitch military band in 1804 He was conductor of the Middlesex MA Musical Society in 1805. He took the name Gould in 1806 to qualify for an inheritance from an uncle. He taught music in NH and MA in some 115 singing schools over 50+ years and had more than 50,000 students. He also compiled and published music. He authored a number of books, one being “History of church music in America” (1853) about early singing schools. He noted traits and temperaments of many singers, some not really performing for the glory of God. He died in Boston, MA. John Perry
