At the name of Jesus

Author: Caroline Maria Noel, 1817-1877 Meter: 6.5.6.5 D Appears in 252 hymnals Scripture: Matthew 13:41 Lyrics: 1 At the name of Jesus ev'ry knee shall bow, ev'ry tongue confess him King of glory now: 'tis the Father's pleasure we should call him Lord, who, from the beginning, was the mighty Word. 2 At his voice creation sprang at once to sight, all the angel faces, all the hosts of light, thrones and dominations, stars upon their way, all the heavenly orders, in their great array. 3 Humbled for a season, to receive a name from the lips of sinners unto whom he came, faithfully he bore it spotless to the last, brought it back victorious, when from death he passed: 4 Bore it up triumphant with its human light, through all ranks of creatures, to the central height, to the throne of Godhead, to the Father's breast; filled it with the glory, of that perfect rest. 5 Name him, Christians, name him, with love strong as death, but with awe and wonder and with bated breath: he is God the Saviour, he is Christ the Lord, ever to be worshipped, trusted, and adored. 6 In your hearts enthrone him; there let him subdue all that is not holy, all that is not true: crown him as your Captain in temptation's hour; let his will enfold you in its light and power. 7 Surely, this Lord Jesus shall return again, with his Father's glory, with his angel train; for all wreaths of empire meet upon his brow, and our hearts confess him King of glory now. Place in my hands the wonderful key that shall unclasp and set me free. Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see. Open my eyes; illumine me, Spirit divine! 2 Open my ears, that I may hear voices of truth thou sendest clear. And while the wave notes fall on my ear, everything false will disappear. Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see. Open my ears; illumine me, Spirit divine! 3 Open my mouth, and let me bear gladly the warm truth everywhere. To thee, O Lord, our hearts we raise

Author: William Chatterton Dix, 1837-1898 Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 109 hymnals Scripture: Matthew 13:36-43 Lyrics: 1 To thee, O Lord, our hearts we raise in hymns of adoration, to thee bring sacrifice of praise with shouts of exultation: bright robes of gold the fields adorn, the hills with joy are ringing, the valleys stand so thick with corn that even they are singing. 2 And now, on this our festal day, thy bounteous hand confessing, upon thine altar, Lord, we lay the first-fruits of thy blessing: by thee the hungry soul is fed with gifts of grace supernal; thou who dost give us earthly bread, give us the bread eternal. 3 We bear the burden of the day, and often toil seems dreary; but labour ends with sunset ray, and rest comes for the weary: may we, the angel-reaping o'er, stand at the last accepted, Christ's golden sheaves for evermore to garners bright elected. 4 O blessèd is that land of God, where saints abide for ever; where golden fields spread far and broad, where flows the crystal river: the strains of all its holy throng with ours today are blending; thrice blessèd is that harvest-song which never hath an ending. Used With Tune: GOLDEN SHEAVES

Now, my tongue, the mystery telling

Author: St Thomas Aquinas, 1227-1274; John Mason Neale, 1818-1866; Edward Caswall 1814-1878 Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 51 hymnals Scripture: Matthew 13:4-9 Lyrics: 1 Now, my tongue, the myst'ry telling of the glorious body sing, and the blood, all price excelling, which the Gentiles' Lord and King, in a virgin's womb once dwelling, shed for this world's ransoming. 2 Giv'n for us, for us descending of a virgin to proceed, he, with us in converse blending, scattered here the gospel seed, till his sojourn drew to ending, which he closed with wondrous deed. 3 At the last great supper lying, circled by his chosen hand, meekly with the law complying, first he finished its command. Then, immortal food supplying, gave himself with his own hand. 4 Word made flesh, by word he maketh very bread his flesh to be; we in wine, Christ's blood partaketh, and if senses fail to see, faith alone the true heart taketh, to behold the mystery. 5 Therefore we, before him bending, this great sacrament revere: types and shadows have their ending, for the newer rite is here; faith, our outward sense befriending, makes our inward vision clear. 6 Glory let us give and blessing to the Father and the Son, honour, might and praise addressing, while eternal ages run; ever too his love confessing, who, from both, with both is One. Amen. Topics: Communion; Holy Communion; Year A Easter 3; Year A Lent 1; Year A Proper 10; Year B Epiphany 2; Year B Second Sunday Before Lent; Years A, B, and C Christmas 2 Used With Tune: PANGE LINGUA
