b. 1955 Person Name: Stephen P. Starke, b. 1955 Scripture: Jeremiah 33:15-16 Author of "Sing Praise to the God of Israel" in Lutheran Service Book Rev. Stephen P. Starke has always had a heart for hymns. At a young age, Starke played hymns out of The Lutheran Hymnal and read through the hymnal to pass the time before Sunday services. Pastor Starke graduated from Concordia University Chicago with a BA. While completing his MDiv from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana, he attempted his first hymn text and was encouraged to write more. Since that time, he has written more than 175 hymns inspired by music and the Scriptures. He has been commissioned to write hymns for special occasions, including the 125th anniversary of Concordia University Wisconsin, as well as his daughter’s wedding. Because of his extensive work as a hymnwriter, Pastor Starke received an honorary doctor of letters degree from Concordia University, Irvine, California, and an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon. It is through the medium of hymns that Pastor Starke desires to preserve and pass on the truths of the Gospel for generations to come.

Heinrich Puchta

1808 - 1858 Person Name: Heinrich Puchta, 1808-1858 Scripture: Jeremiah 33:6-8 Author of "Jesus Comes Today with Healing" in Christian Worship Puchta, Christian Rudolph Heinrich, son of W. H. Puchta, then residing as Justizrath at Kadolzburg, near Nürnberg, was born at Kadolzburg, Aug. 19, 1808. He matriculated at the University of Erlangen, in 1826, and completed his theological course at Berlin. In 1832 he was appointed Stadtvicar (general assistant preacher) at Munich, where he became acquainted with many men of light and leading; and in 1837 became repetent in theology at Erlangen. In 1839 he was appointed professor of Philosophy and Religion in the newly organised Lyceum at Speyer (Spires), but his nervous system broke down in 1841, and he had to be confined in the lunatic asylum of Winnenthal, Württemberg. After a year he was able to take charge of the parish of Eyb, near Ansbach, and then became, in 1852, second pastor, and in 1856, first pastor of St. James's Church, in Augsburg. He died at Augsburg, Sept. 12, 1858 (Koch, vii. 277; Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie xxvi. 687, &c). Puchta had a genuine poetic faculty, and a mastery of style. His early poems were secular; his later were mostly hymns. His hymns were mainly meant for private use, and appeared principally in his Morgen-und Abend Andachten am Christlichen Hausaltar in Gesängen, Erlangen, 1843 (2nd ed. 1857, 3rd 1868). Besides these, 38—including 11 translations from the Latin—-were given in Knapp's Christoterp, 1837-1852. A few others, with a selection of his poems, edited by Knapp, appeared in his posthumousGedichte, Stuttgart, 1860. Knapp in his Evangelischer Lieder, 1850, included 30 hymns by Puchta, and in his edition of 1865 no less than 42. Puchta was also one of the editors of the Bavarian Gesang-Buch, 1854. Those of his hymns which have passed into English (all from his Hausaltar, 1843) are:— i. Ein neues Jahr ist angefangen. New Year. In 1843, p. 173, as above, in 6 stanzas entitled, "New Year's Morning." In Knapp's Evangelischer Lieder-Schatz, 1850, No. 2104. William J. Kirkpatrick

1838 - 1921 Person Name: Wm. J. Kirkpatrick Scripture: Jeremiah 33:2 Composer of "[Amid these cares and sorrows]" in On Joyful Wing William J. Kirkpatrick (b. Duncannon, PA, 1838; d. Philadelphia, PA, 1921) received his musical training from his father and several other private teachers. A carpenter by trade, he engaged in the furniture business from 1862 to 1878. He left that profession to dedicate his life to music, serving as music director at Grace Methodist Church in Philadelphia. Kirkpatrick compiled some one hundred gospel song collections; his first, Devotional Melodies (1859), was published when he was only twenty-one years old. Many of these collections were first published by the John Hood Company and later by Kirkpatrick's own Praise Publishing Company, both in Philadelphia. Bert Polman

Michael Morgan

b. 1948 Scripture: Jeremiah 1-52 Author of "Song of the Prophets" in Lift Up Your Hearts Michael Morgan (b. 1948) is a church musician, Psalm scholar, and collector of English Bibles and Psalters from Atlanta, Georgia. After almost 40 years, he now serves as Organist Emeritus for Atlanta’s historic Central Presbyterian Church, and as Seminary Musician at Columbia Theological Seminary. He holds degrees from Florida State University and Atlanta University, and did post-graduate study with composer Richard Purvis in San Francisco. He has played recitals, worship services, and master classes across the U. S., and in England, France, Spain, Switzerland, and Germany. He is author of the Psalter for Christian Worship (1999; rev. 2010), and a regular contributor in the field of psalmody (most recently to the Reformed collections Psalms for All Seasons and Lift Up Your Hearts, and the new Presbyterian hymnal, Glory to God).
