What Gift Can We Bring?

Author: Jane Marshall Meter: 11.11.11.11 Appears in 14 hymnals Scripture: Lamentations 3:23 First Line: What gift can we bring, what present, what token Lyrics: 1 What gift can we bring, what present, what token? What words can convey it--the joy of this day? When grateful we come, remembering, rejoicing, what song can we offer in honor and praise? 2 Give thanks for the Past, for those who had vision, who planted and watered so dreams could come true. Give thanks for the Now, for study, for worship, for mission that bids us turn prayer into deed. 3 Give thanks for Tomorrow, full or surprises, for knowing whatever Tomorrow may bring, God gives us his word that always, forever, we rest in his keeping and live in his love. 4 This gift we now bring, this present, this token, these words can convey it--the joy of this day! When grateful we come, remembering, rejoicing, this song we now offer in honor and praise! What God Ordains Is Always Good

Author: Samuel Rodigast, 1649-1808 Meter: 8.7.8.7.4.4.7.7 Appears in 14 hymnals Scripture: Lamentations 3:19-26 Lyrics: 1 What God ordains is always good: His will is just and holy. As He directs my life for me, I follow meek and lowly. My God indeed In ev'ry need Knows well how He will shield me; To Him, then, I will yield me. 2 What God ordains is always good: He never will deceive me; He leads me in His righteous way, And never will He leave me. I take content What He has sent; His hand that sends me sadness Will turn my tears to gladness. 3 What God ordains is always good: His loving thought attends me; No poison can be in the cup That my physician sends me. My God is true; Each morning new I trust His grace unending, My life to Him commending. 4 What God ordains is always good: He is my friend and Father; He suffers naught to do me harm Though many storms may gather. Now I may know Both joy and woe; Some day I shall see clearly That He has loved me dearly. 5 What God ordains is always good: Though I the cup am drinking Which savors now of bitterness, I take it without shrinking. For after grief God gives relief, My heart with comfort filling And all my sorrow stilling. 6 What God ordains is always good: This truth remains unshaken. Though sorrow, need, or death be mine, I shall not be forsaken. I fear no harm, For with His arm He shall embrace and shield me; So to my God I yield me. Lament. 3:37-40: Amidst the mighty, where is he

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Lamentations 3:37-40 First Line: Amidst the mighty, where is he Lyrics: Amidst the mighty, where is he who saith, and it is done? Each varying scene of changeful life is from the Lord alone. He gives in gladsome bow’rs to dwell, or clothes in sorrow’s shroud; His hand hath formed the light, his hand hath formed the dark’ning cloud. Why should a living man complain beneath the chast’ning rod? Our sins afflict us; and the cross must bring us back to God. O sons of men! with anxious care your hearts and ways explore; Return from paths of vice to God: return, and sin no more!

Lift up your hearts, believers!

Author: Unknown Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Lamentations 3:41 Lyrics: 1 Lift up your hearts, believers! This is the holy day when Jesus, our Redeemer, completes salvation's way. The forty days are over, and clouds shine high and bright as Christ, the overcomer, is lifted from our sight. 2 Lift up your hearts, believers! Ye gates, lift up your heads! Though minds be full of wonder, though souls be filled with dread. The Spirit has been promised, and, though we are alone, we wait until the moment when fire and wind are known. 3 Lift up your hearts believers! And do not be downcast, for Jesus, our Redeemer, receives the crown at last. The thorns of crucifixion are changed to stars of light, and Christ, the Lord of glory, is named as God's delight. 4 Lift up your hearts, believers! This is the holy day when Jesus, our Redeemer, completes salvation's way. Topics: Christ Risen Ascension; Christian Year Ascension Used With Tune: ST. THEODULPH
