Adam, our Father and our head

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #234 (1835) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: Romans 4:25 Lyrics: Adam, our father and our head, Transgressed, and justice doomed us dead; The fiery law speaks all despair: There's no reprieve nor pardon there. But, O unutterable grace The Son of God takes Adam's place; Down to our world the Savior flies, Stretches his arms, and bleeds, and dies. Justice was pleased to bruise the God, And pay its wrongs with heav'nly blood: What unknown racks and pangs he bore! Then rose; the law could ask no more. Amazing work! look down, ye skies, Wonder and gaze with all your eyes; Ye heav'nly thrones, stoop from above, And bow to this mysterious love. Lo! they adore th' incarnate Son, And sing the glories he hath won; Sing how he broke our iron chains, How deep he suiik, how high he reigns! Triumph and reign, victorious Lord, By all the flaming hosts adored; And say, dear Couqueror, say how long Ere we shall rise to join their song. Send down a chariot from above, With fiery wheels, and paved with love Raise us beyond th' ethereal blue, To sing and love as angels do. Languages: English

Salvation now to us has come

Author: Paul Speratus, 1484-1551; Carl Döving, 1867-1936 Hymnal: Together in Song #195 (1999) Meter: 8.7.87.8.8.7 Scripture: Romans 4:13-25 Lyrics: 1 Salvation now to us has come by God’s free grace and favour; good works cannot avert our doom, they help and save us never. In faith we look to Christ alone, who did for all the world atone; he is our one redeemer. 2 The law of God fulfilled must be, or we were lost for ever; therefore God sent his Son that he might us from death deliver. For us the law he has fulfilled, the Father's anger he has stilled; God's curse is gone for ever. 3 Since Christ has full atonement made and brought us to salvation, each Christian therefore may be glad, and build on this foundation: your grace alone, dear Lord, we plead, your death is now our life indeed, for you have paid our ransom. 4 To you, O Lord, in faith we cling, we love and trust you truly, and from this faith good works will spring that serve our neighbour duly. It's faith alone that justified; the works that from such faith arise reveal that it is living. 5 All blessing, honour, thanks and praise to Father, Son, and Spirit, to God who saved us by his grace; all glory to his merit! O Triune God, in heaven above, you have revealed your saving love; your blessèd name we hallow. Salvation unto Us has Come

Author: Paul Speratus Hymnal: The Lutheran Hymnal #377 (1941) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Scripture: Romans 4 Lyrics: 1 Salvation unto us has come By God's free grace and favor; Good works cannot avert our doom, They help and save us never. Faith looks to Jesus Christ alone, Who did for all the world atone; He is our one Redeemer. 2 What God did in His Law demand And none to Him could render Caused wrath and woe on ev'ry hand For man, the vile offender. Our flesh has not those pure desires The spirit of the Law requires, And lost is our condition. 3 It was a false, misleading dream That God His Law had given That sinners could themselves redeem And by their works gain heaven. The Law is but a mirror bright To bring the inbred sin to light That lurks within our nature. 4 From sin our flesh could not abstain, Sin held its sway unceasing; The task was useless and in vain, Our guilt was e'er increasing. None can remove sin's poisoned dart Or purify our guileful heart-- So deep is our corruption. 5 Yet as the Law must be fulfilled Or we must die despairing, Christ came and has God's anger stilled, Our human nature sharing. He hath for us the Law obeyed And thus His Father's vengeance stayed Which over us impended. 6 Since Christ has full atonement made And brought to us salvation, Each Christian therefore may be glad And build on this foundation. Thy grace alone, dear Lord, I plead, Thy death is now my life indeed, For Thou have paid my ransom. 7 Let me not doubt, but trust in Thee, Thy Word cannot be broken: Thy call rings out, "Come unto Me!" No falsehood hast Thou spoken. Baptized into Thy precious name, My faith cannot be put to shame, And I shall never perish. 8 The Law reveals the guilt of sin And makes us conscience-stricken; The Gospel then doth enter in The sinful soul to quicken. Come to the cross, trust Christ, and live; The Law no peace can ever give, No comfort and no blessing. 9 Faith clings to Jesus' cross alone And rests in Him unceasing; And by its fruits true faith is known, With love and hope increasing. For faith alone doth justify; Works serve thy neighbor and supply The proof that faith is living. 10 All blessing, honor, thanks, and praise To Father, Son, and Spirit, The God who saved us by His grace-- All glory to His merit! O Triune God in heaven above, Who has revealed Thy saving love; Thy blessed name be hallowed. Amen. Topics: Faith and Justification Languages: English Tune Title: ES IST DAS HEIL
