Baynard L. Fox

1932 - 1982 Scripture: Romans 1:16 Author of "I'll Tell the World That I'm a Christian" in Baptist Hymnal 1991 Baynard Layne Fox USA 1932-1982. Born at Louisville, KY, his family lived at St Matthews, KY, when he was age 7. He was musically inclined. Not much information found regarding his life. He married Mary Darlene Tarter (1932-2020), and they had a daughter, Lois Elayne. At some point he became a writer, composer, and music editor. He wrote songs and cantatas, possibly for the Fred Bock Music Company (as that name is related to some of his work). He also directed the Atlanta Christian Chorus, an interdenominational and inter-racial group of 140 members representing 10 denominations and 65 churches in the Atlanta metro area. Some of his cantatas include: ‘The Christmas Spirit’ (1962); ‘A New Creation’ 1969); ‘Well done, thou good and faithful servant’ (1970); ‘When God steps in Choir Book’ (1976). His wife worked for Amoco Oil Company (time period not found). He died at Tucker, GA. John Perry

Marc Byrd

Scripture: Romans 1:20 Author of "God of Wonders" in Lift Up Your Hearts Marc Byrd is an American musician, producer, and writer. He is currently one half of the post-rock/ambient duo Hammock, and previously fronted the alternative rock band Common Children, as well as the duo GlassByrd with his wife Christine Glass. He has performed with a number of artists, including Jónsi Birgisson of Sigur Rós and Alex Somers of Parachutes. In 2005 he joined the Christian alternative rock band The Choir as musician and producer. He’s worked with Steve Hindalong, of The Choir, on a number of projects, and the pair wrote “God of Wonders” in 2000 for their co-produced worship series, “City on a Hill.” Laura de Jong

He worked, lived,and died in Williamsport, PA. An active member, he worked at the Pine Tree Methodist Episcopal Church there. He married Lucy Love Levan. He started his music career with John Howard of New York and Daniel B. Towner of the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. He edited a dozen gospel song books and wrote nearly 1500 songs. Vicente P. Mendoza

1875 - 1955 Person Name: Vicente Mendoza Scripture: Romans 1:16 Translator of "Habladme Más de Cristo" in Himnario Bautista Vicente Mendoza Born: December 24, 1875, Guadalajara, Mexico. Died: 1955, Mexico City, Mexico. Mendoza studied initially under Don Aurelio Ortega. At age of 11 he went to work in a Protestant print shop in Mexico City and helped produce El Evangelista Mexicano (The Mexican Evangelist) for the Methodist Church of the South; he rose to become its director for 17 years. Looking to improve himself, Mendoza entered a night school for workers, but later feeling the call to preach the Gospel, he entered the Presbyterian Seminary in Mexico City. When the seminary closed temporarily, Mendoza entered the Methodist Institute of Puebla, where he finished the course in theology. In 1898 he became a member of the Annual Conference of the Mexican Methodist Church. From 1915 to 1917, he belonged to the Southern Methodist Conference of California. Shirley Erena Murray

1931 - 2020 Person Name: Shirley Erena Murray (b. 1931) Scripture: Romans 1:20 Author of "The spring has come" in Church Hymnary (4th ed.) Shirley Erena Murray (b. Invercargill, New Zealand, 1931) studied music as an undergraduate but received a master’s degree (with honors) in classics and French from Otago University. Her upbringing was Methodist, but she became a Presbyterian when she married the Reverend John Stewart Murray, who was a moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. Shirley began her career as a teacher of languages, but she became more active in Amnesty International, and for eight years she served the Labor Party Research Unit of Parliament. Her involvement in these organizations has enriched her writing of hymns, which address human rights, women’s concerns, justice, peace, the integrity of creation, and the unity of the church. Many of her hymns have been performed in CCA and WCC assemblies. In recognition for her service as a writer of hymns, the New Zealand government honored her as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit on the Queen’s birthday on 3 June 2001. Through Hope Publishing House, Murray has published three collections of her hymns: In Every Corner Sing (eighty-four hymns, 1992), Everyday in Your Spirit (forty-one hymns, 1996), and Faith Makes the Song (fifty hymns, 2002). The New Zealand Hymnbook Trust, for which she worked for a long time, has also published many of her texts (cf. back cover, Faith Makes the Song). In 2009, Otaga University conferred on her an honorary doctorate in literature for her contribution to the art of hymn writing. Colin Gibson

b. 1933 Person Name: Colin Alexander Gibson (b. 1933) Scripture: Romans 1:20 Composer of "VERVACITY" in Church Hymnary (4th ed.) Colin Gibson (b. 1933) was born in Dunedin, the south island of New Zealand. He has been writing hymn texts and hymn settings for over 20 years. His works have been published and performed in Africa, the United States, Asia and Australasia, Great Britain and Europe. He is organist and director of the Mornington Methodist Choir, Dunedin, New Zealand, a lay preacher, and retired in 1999 as Head of the Department and Donald Collie Professor of English at the University of Otago where he currently heads the Department of Theatre Studies and continues to lecture on English Literature as Emeritus Professor. He has conducted numerous hymn workshops in New Zealand, Australia and Great Britain, and has been co-editor of a number of hymn collections. His frequent collaboration with Shirley Erena Murray is represented in several Hope publications, and he has his own published collections of hymns: Singing Love (Collins) and more recently Reading the Signature (Hope, 1994 - Code #1753) and Songs for a Rainbow People (Hope, 1998 - Code #8005).
