O Land of the Blessed

Author: Emily H. Miller Appears in 16 hymnals Scripture: Matthew 25:34 Lyrics: 1 O Land of the blessed! thy shadowless skies Sometimes in my dreaming I see; I hear the glad songs that the glorified sing, Steal over Eternity’s sea; Tho’ dark are the shadows that gather between, I know that thy morning is fair; I catch but a glimpse of thy glory and light, And whisper: “Would God I were there!” 2 Dear home of my Father, thou City of peace, No shadow of changing can mar; How glad are the souls that have tasted thy joy! How blest thine inhabitants are! When weary of toiling, I think of the day— Who knows if its dawning be near?— When He who doth love me shall call me away From all that hath burdened me here. Used With Tune: [O land of the blessed]

Wake, O wake! With tidings thrilling

With tidings thrilling the watchmen all the air are filling, arise, Jerusalem, arise! Midnight strikes! No more delaying, 'The hour has come!' we hear them saying, 'where are ye all, ye virgins wise? The Bridegroom comes in sight, raise high your torches bright!' Alleluia! The wedding song swells loud and strong: go forth and join the festal throng. 2 Zion hears the watchmen shouting, her heart leaps up with joy undoubting, she stands and waits with eager eyes; see her Friend from heaven descending, adorned with truth and grace unending! Her light burns clear, her star doth rise. Now come, thou precious Crown, Lord Jesus, God's own Son! Alleluia! Let us prepare to follow there, where in thy supper we may share. 3 Every soul in thee rejoices; from earth and from angelic voices be glory given to thee alone! Now the gates of pearl receive us, thy presence never more shall leave us, we stand with angels round thy throne. Earth cannot give below the bliss thou dost bestow. Alleluia! Grant us to raise, to length of days, the triumph-chorus of thy praise. Topics: Advent I Year A; Advent I Year C; Christ the King Year C Used With Tune: WACHET AUF

Behold the Bridegroom

Author: William G. Schell Meter: 11.11.11.11 with refrain Appears in 4 hymnals Scripture: Matthew 25:1-13 First Line: We're nearing the closing of time's mortal year Refrain First Line: Behold, the Bridegroom cometh Lyrics: 1 We’re nearing the closing of time’s mortal year, God’s kingdom doth now as ten virgins appear, With lamps trimmed and burning, a light to their feet, They’re all going forward the Bridegroom to meet. Refrain: Behold, the Bridegroom cometh, Behold, the Bridegroom cometh; Behold, the Bridegroom cometh, Go ye out to meet Him. 2 With oil in their vessels the wise forward go, Their lamps shining bright and their hearts white as snow, They’re ready each moment to welcome the Lord, Who shortly will take them to gain their reward. [Refrain] 3 The foolish go forward without any oil, They’re just as contented as those who have oil; They trust in the future the oil to supply, They’ll wake soon to find that their lamps are all dry. [Refrain] 4 Lo, now, just at midnight, the watchman they hear; “Awake from your slumber, the Bridegroom is near”; Their lamps to prepare now the foolish arise, “Our lamps are gone out!” they all cry in surprise. [Refrain] 5 The foolish to wise say, “Give us of your oil”; “Not so, lest there be not enough for us all; Go, buy for yourselves from the merchants who sell”; They start, but, “Too late!” in their anguish they tell. [Refrain] 6 Lo, now comes the Bridegroom with angelic host, All those who are ready go into the feast; The door being closed come the foolish to knock, “Depart,” saith the Lord, “I indeed know you not.” [Refrain] Used With Tune: [We're nearing the closing of time's mortal year] Text Sources: Timeless Truths (http://library.timelesstruths.org/music/Behold_the_Bridegroom); Faith Publishing House, Evening Light Songs, 1949, edited 1987 (359); The Gospel Trumpet Company, Select Hymns, 1911 (561)

Here to the house of God we come

Author: Shirley Erena Murray (b. 1931) Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 4 hymnals Scripture: Matthew 25:31-46 Lyrics: 1 Here to the house of God we come, home of the people of the Way, here to give thanks for all we have, naming our needs for every day, we who have roof and rent and bread, sure of a place to rest our head. 2 There is a knocking at our door, sound of the homeless of the world, voice of the frightened refugee, cry of the children in the cold, asking the least that is their right, safety and shelter for the night. 3 God who is shelter, who is home, in borrowed rooms you came to live, pleaded to save the dispossessed, crucified, lay in borrowed grave: these are no strangers in your eyes, this is your family which cries. 4 We are all tenants of your love; gather us round a common fire, warm us in company with Christ, give us the heart to feel, to share table and lodging with free hand, space in our living, in our land. Topics: Our Response to God in the worship of God's house; Children; Church images of; Gathering; God names and imags of; Strangers and Exiles Used With Tune: KHAO I DANG
