George Stringer Rowe

1830 - 1913 Person Name: George Stringer Rowe, 1830-1913 Scripture: Romans 10:14-17 Author of "Cradled in a manger, meanly" in Singing the Faith Rowe, George Stringer, was born at Margate in 1830, and educated for the Wesleyan Ministry at Didsbury College. He entered the Wesleyan Ministry in 1853, and has since held important appointments at Ipswich, Hull, Southport, Leeds, Edinburgh, London, &c. In 1888 he was appointed to the chair of Pastoral Theology in Headingley College, Leeds. He was the author of "Life of John Hunt, &c."; "At His Feet"; "On His Day"; "The Psalms in Private Devotion"; and "Alone with the Word." His hymns include:— 1. Behold Thy youthful army. 2. Come, children all and praise. 3. Cradled in a manger meanly. 4. When they brought little children. These hymns were written for Sunday School Anniversaries, and were included in the Methodist Sunday School Hymn Book, 1879. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

Ludwig van Beethoven

1770 - 1827 Person Name: Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770-1827 Scripture: Romans 10:15 Composer of "HYMN TO JOY" in Hymns for a Pilgrim People A giant in the history of music, Ludwig van Beethoven (b. Bonn, Germany, 1770; d. Vienna, Austria, 1827) progressed from early musical promise to worldwide, lasting fame. By the age of fourteen he was an accomplished viola and organ player, but he became famous primarily because of his compositions, including nine symphonies, eleven overtures, thirty piano sonatas, sixteen string quartets, the Mass in C, and the Missa Solemnis. He wrote no music for congregational use, but various arrangers adapted some of his musical themes as hymn tunes; the most famous of these is ODE TO JOY from the Ninth Symphony. Although it would appear that the great calamity of Beethoven's life was his loss of hearing, which turned to total deafness during the last decade of his life, he composed his greatest works during this period. W. A. Ogden

1841 - 1897 Scripture: Romans 10:15 Composer of "[Oigo la voz del Buen Pastor]" in Himnos de Gloria William Augustine Ogden USA 1841-1897. Born at Franklin County, OH, his family moved to IN when he was age six. He studied music in local singing schools at age 8, and by age 10 could read church music fairly well. Later, he could write out a melody by hearing it sung or played. He enlisted in the American Civil War in the 30th IN Volunteer Infantry. During the war he organized a male choir which became well known throughout the Army of the Cumberland. After the war, he returned home, resumed music study, and taught school. He married Jennie V Headington, and they had two children: Lowell and Marian. He worked for the Iowa Normal School, Toledo Public School System. Among his teachers: Lowell Mason, Thomas Hastings, E E Baily and B F Baker, president of the Boston Music School. He wrote many hymns, both lyrics and/or music. He later issued his first song book, “The silver song” (1870). It became quite popular, selling 500,000 copies. He went on to publish other song books. Ogden also taught music at many schools in the U S and Canada. In 1887 he became superintendent of music in the public schools of Toledo, OH. His works include: “New silver songs for Sunday school” (1872), “Crown of life” (1875), “Notes of victory” (1885), “The way of life” (1886), “Gathering jewels” (1886). He was known as a very enthusiastic person in his work and a very congenial one as well. He died at Toledo, OH. John Perry

Indianapolis, Indiana, February 9, 1932) was the music editor of *Great Songs of the Church, Revised*, published by ACU Press in 1986. He earned a B.S. degree in music education from Abilene Christian University, a masters degree in music composition and theory from the University of North Texas, and a Ph.D. in choral literature from the University of Iowa. Boyd edited *Children, Rejoice!* (Sweet, 1979) and he authored *Rehearsal Guide for the Choral Director* (Parker, 1970) and *Leading the Lord's Singing* (Quality, 1981). He is a member of Churches of Christ and lives in Abilene, Texas. Monty Lynn
