Come unto Me (Peterson)

Author: Susan H. Peterson Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: O weary one, weighed down by care Lyrics: 1. O weary one, weighed down by care, Come unto Me and rest. Cast all your burdens at My feet, And you will be refreshed. Come unto Me, come unto Me, For I am meek in heart. Take up My yoke and learn from Me, And let your cares depart. 2. Come claim My strength, you faint in heart And you who have no might. I am the everlasting God; Through Me you can take flight. Mount up, mount up on eagles’ wings, Soar upward to the sky. Draw from My reservoir of power, A limitless supply. 3. I am the Vine, you’re just a branch; You must remain in Me. Apart from Me you’ll bear no fruit; Your life will empty be. Remain in Me, remain in Me, And I’ll remain in you. By this will God be glorified; You’ll be My follower true. 4. And never tire of doing good; Someday there’ll be reward. For at the proper time you’ll reap A harvest for your Lord. So don’t give up, don’t e’er give up, Do good to all mankind. Especially love God’s family and Eternal life you’ll find. George Cooper

1840 - 1927 Person Name: Geo. Cooper Author of "Passing To the Better Land" in Gospel Melodies George Cooper, poet, was born in the city of New York, May 14, 1840 son of John and Hepzibah Cooper, He was educated in the public schools of his native city, and afterwards studied law under the late Chester A. Arthur. After practicing for a short time, he renounced his profession to devote himself to the vocation to which his natural gifts inclined him. In his early years, he had developed a taste for writing, and before his sixteenth year had begun to contribute acceptable verses to several leading magazines. Encouraged by the success that met his early productions, he wrote constantly, and became a regular contributor to such periodicals as “The Independent,” “Harpers’ Young People,” and “Harper’s Magazine,” “Atlantic Monthly,” “Putman’s Monthly,” “Our Young Folks,” and “Appleton’s Journal.” Writing constantly for more than a decade, Mr. Cooper has frequently enriched the periodical literature of America by verses of much felicity, and has attracted a wide circle, among his poems are always welcomed with pleasure. His happiest verse has been written for children, and in it lies his chief claim to remembrance. A number of his children’s poems have been published in the collection known as “School and Home Melodies;” and he also issued a volume of hymns consisting exclusively of his own writing and entitled, “The Chaplet.” Among his best-known songs are: “Beautiful Isle of the Sea,” “Must We Then Meet as Strangers,” “Sweet Genevieve,” “While the days Are Going By,” and “God Bless the Little Church Around the Corner.” He has written song words for such composers as Wallace, Abt, Thomas, Millard, and Foster. Of His Other poems, “After,” and “Hereafter” are general favorites; the “Ballad of the Storming of Stony Point” was awarded a prize, and “Learning to Walk” was honored by a commendation from the late William Cullen Bryant. Mr. Cooper was married, in 1877, to Mary E., Daughter of William Tyson, and has since resided at Jersey Heights, where he still employs his leisure in writing. --http://www.mamalisa.com/blog/only-one-mother-–-a-poem

W. O. Cushing

1823 - 1902 Author of "One Soul for Thee" in Hymns that Help Rv William Orcutt Cushing USA 1823-1902. Born at Hingham, MA, he read the Bible as a teenager and became a follower of the Orthodox Christian school of thought. At age 18 he decided to become a minister, following in his parents theology. His first pastorate was at the Christian Church, Searsburg, NY. He married Hena Proper in 1854. She was a great help to him throughout his ministry. He ministered at several NY locations over the years, including Searsburg, Auburn, Brookley, Buffalo, and Sparta. Hena died in 1870, and he returned to Searsburg, again serving as pastor there. Working diligently with the Sunday school, he was dearly beloved by young and old. Soon after, he developed a creeping paralysis that caused him to lose his voice. He retired from ministry after 27 years. He once gave all his savings ($1000) to help a blind girl receive an education. He was instrumental in the erection of the Seminary at Starkey, NY. He gave material aid to the school for the blind at Batavia. He was mindful of the suffering of others, but oblivious to his own. After retiring, he asked God to give him something to do. He discovered he had a talent for writing and kept busy doing that. He authored about 300 hymn lyrics. The last 13 years of his life he lived with Rev. and Mrs. E. E Curtis at Lisbon Center, NY, and joined with the Wesleyan Methodist Church there. He died at Searsburg, NY.
