Hail, Thou Once-Despised Jesus

Author: John Bakewell Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 625 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 5:7 Lyrics: 1 Hail, thou once despised Jesus; Hail, thou Galilean King! Thou didst suffer to release us; thou didst free salvation bring. Hail, thou universal Savior, bearer of our sin and shame, by thy merit we find favor: life is given through thy name. 2 Paschal Lamb, by God appointed, all our sins on thee were laid: by almighty love anointed, thou hast full atonement made: all thy people are forgiven through the virtue of thy blood; opened is the gate of heaven; reconciled are we with God. 3 Jesus, hail! enthroned in glory, there for ever to abide; all the heav'nly hosts adore thee, seated at thy Father's side. There for sinners thou art pleading: there thou dost our place prepare, ever for us interceding, till in glory we appear. 4 Worship, honor, power, and blessing thou art worthy to receive; loudest praises without ceasing meet it is for us to give. Help, ye bright angelic spirits, bring your sweetest, noblest lays; help to sing our Savior's merits; help to chant Emmanuel's praise! Topics: Jesus Christ Mediator Used With Tune: IN BABILONE

Marty Haugen

b. 1950 Scripture: 1 Corinthians 5:7 Composer of "[Jesus, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world]" in Catholic Book of Worship III Marty Haugen (b. 1950), is a prolific liturgical composer with many songs included in hymnals across the liturgical spectrum of North American hymnals and beyond, with many songs translated into different languages. He was raised in the American Lutheran Church, received a BA in psychology from Luther College, yet found his first position as a church musician in a Roman Catholic parish at a time when the Roman Catholic Church was undergoing profound liturgical and musical changes after Vatican II. Finding a vocation in that parish to provide accessible songs for worship, he continued to compose and to study, receiving an MA in pastoral studies at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul Minnesota. A number of liturgical settings were prepared for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and more than 400 of his compositions are available from several publishers, especially GIA Publications, who also produced some 30 recordings of his songs. He is composer-in-residence at Mayflower Community Congregational Church in Minneapolis and continues to compose and travel to speak and teach at worship events around the world. Emily Brink
