J. R. Baxter

1887 - 1960 Person Name: J. R. Baxter, Jr. Arranger of "[I never can forget the day]" in Bill Garrett's 1951 Special Sacred Songs Jesse Randall (Pap) Baxter, Jr. (1887-1960) Born: December 8, 1887, Lebanon, Alabama. Died: January 21, 1960. Baxter grew up in DeKalb County, Alabama. In 1926, he bought part of Virgil Stamps’ Gospel music firm, which became the Stamps-Baxter Music and Printing Company, one of the most successful Gospel music publishers of the early 20th Century. Baxter ran the company’s Chattanooga, Tennessee, office until Stamps’ death in 1940, then moved to Dallas, Texas, to run the main office. After Baxter’s death, his wife, Clarice, ran the business until she died; it was then sold to Zondervan. Baxter was inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in 1997. Judson W. Van DeVenter

1855 - 1939 Person Name: J. W. Van DeVenter Author of "My Mother's Prayer" in The New National Baptist Hymnal Judson W. Van DeVenter was born 15 December 1855 on a farm near the village of Dundee, Michigan. He was educated in the country and village schools, and at Hillsdale College. He later moved to St. Petersburg, Florida. He wrote about 100 hymns. W. S. Weeden

1847 - 1908 Composer of "[I never can forget the day]" in The New National Baptist Hymnal Winfield S. Weeden was born in 1847 in Middleport, OH. In his early life he was active in teaching singing schools throughout that area in Ohio. As singer and associate to Judson VandeVenter in his evangelistic campaigns, Weeden assisted in meetings at East Palestine and Sebring. He compiled several collections of hymns among them The Peacemaker, Songs of the Peacemaker, and Songs of Sovereign Grace. Weeden died in 1908.
