Chas. H. Gabriel

Lawrence, Jennie Ree ============= For the first seventeen years of his life Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (b. Wilton, IA, 1856; d. Los Angeles, CA, 1932) lived on an Iowa farm, where friends and neighbors often gathered to sing. Gabriel accompanied them on the family reed organ he had taught himself to play. At the age of sixteen he began teaching singing in schools (following in his father's footsteps) and soon was acclaimed as a fine teacher and composer. He moved to California in 1887 and served as Sunday school music director at the Grace Methodist Church in San Francisco. After moving to Chicago in 1892, Gabriel edited numerous collections of anthems, cantatas, and a large number of songbooks for the Homer Rodeheaver, Hope, and E. O. Excell publishing companies. He composed hundreds of tunes and texts, at times using pseudonyms such as Charlotte G. Homer. The total number of his compositions is estimated at about seven thousand. Birdie Bell

Author of "I'm Standing on the Rock of Ages" in The Best Gospel Songs and their composers C. Louise Bell, also known a Birdie Bell, was born, raised and lived in New York city. She began writing hymns when she was sixteen years old. She is the author of more than 500 hymns, 200 religious poems, and 200 Christmas and Easter lyrics, as well as short stories, and articles. She wrote under the name of Birdie Bell, which is what her family called her. George C. Hugg

1848 - 1907 Person Name: Geo. C. Hugg Composer of "[On the Rock of Ages standing]" in Gospel Hymn Selections for female voices George Crawford Hugg USA 1848-1907. Born near Haddonfield, NJ, he became choirmaster at the Berlin, NJ, Presbyterian Church at age 12. At age 14 he published his first song, “Walk in the light”, which became very popular. He married Anne E Ketchum, and they had a daughter, Evangeline. He served as choirmaster of the Tabernacle Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, and also the Broad Street and Arch Street Methodist Episcopal Churches there. He was also closely associated with the Harper Memorial Presbyterian Church there. He was a prolific composer with over 2000 works, publishing 18 books of revival and Sunday school music, and 90 songs for special occasions (Christmas, Easter, etc.). He died in Philadelphia, PA. C. C. Case

1843 - 1918 Person Name: Charles Clinton Case Composer of "[Standing on the Rock of Ages]" in The Cyber Hymnal Charles Clinton Case USA 1843-1918. Born in Linesville, PA, his family moved to Gustavus, OH, when he was four. His father was an accomplished violinist, but a neighbor gave him a small violin when he was nine, and he mastered it before he could read music. At age 16 he went to singing school (without parental consent), borrowing the money from a neighbor. C. A. Bentley, a prominent conductor, was his first vocal music instructor, and William Bradbury's “Jubilee” was the school textbook. For three winters in a row, he attended Bentley's singing school, working his father's farm in the summer. He married Annie Williams. In 1866 he studied music in Boston with B. F. Baker. He also studied under George Root, Horatio Palmer, Philip Bliss, George Webb, and others, hymnwriters in their own right. Soon after, Case began teaching music, and when James McGranahan moved two miles from his home, they became friends. Case wrote and edited a number of Gospel song books in his life. 6 works. A. Byron Condo

1854 - 1941 Person Name: A. Byron Condo Author of "Hiding in the Rock" Pseudonym: A. A. Armen, Asa, Alvin, Dr. Arm. =============================== Adam Byron Condo (also known as Asa Allan Armen) was born November 16, 1854 in Washington County, Indiana to John Condo and Catherine Beaver. Sometime in the 1870's, in his youth, he got into trouble. He was advised by an attorney to legally change his name and move away. He moved away and changed his name to Asa Allan Armen without telling his family. He served as a minister in the United Brethren Church. According to the 1880 census he was living in Hillsdale, Michigan and teaching music. He was then hired as a music teacher at Hartman College in Indiana. He met his wife, Lucretia Shuck, there, and they were married in 1884. His wife was hired as a music teacher at the high school in Columbus, Indiana and Asa continued his ministerial duties. He was promoted as presiding elder of the Indiana Conference of the United Brethren Church. Meanwhile, Rev. A. C. Wilmore, who knew both Armen and his brother Samuel Condo, who was minister of the Congregational Church in Marion, Indiana, recognized Armen from photos shown to him by Samuel Condo. Samuel Condo and two other ministers confronted Armen in 1897 and threatened him with consequences if he did not confess his true identity. Armen then resigned his commission, left his wife (assuming she knew why) and fled to Maine to have his name legally changed back to Adam Byron Condo. He then moved to Texas and taught music. His wife later learned what had happened, tracked him down, and they started corresponding and visiting each other; however, her mother was opposed to them reuniting. In 1904 Condo was recommissioned as a minister in the United Brethren Church, working a circuit headquartered in French Lick, Indiana. He was reunited with his wife in 1906 after his mother-in-law passed away. He wrote several hymns and edited "The Welcome Voice" under the name of Asa Armen.
