What a friend we have in Jesus

Author: Joseph Scriven (1819-1886) Hymnal: Church Hymnary (4th ed.) #547 (2005) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Scripture: Luke 18:1 Lyrics: 1 What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! Oh, what peace we often forfeit, oh, what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer! 2 Have we trials and temptations, is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged: take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness: take it to the Lord in prayer. 3 Are we weak and heavy-laden, cumbered with a load of care? Jesus is our only refuge: take it to the Lord in prayer. Do your friends despise, forsake you? Take it to the Lord in prayer! In his arms he'll take and shield you; you will find a solace there. Brightest and Best

Author: Reginald Heber (1783-1826) Hymnal: Common Praise (1998) #159 (1998) Meter: 11.10.11.10 Scripture: Luke 18:1-8 First Line: Brightest and best of the stars of the morning Lyrics: 1 Brightest and best of the stars of the morning, dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid: gem of the East, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer is laid. 2 Cold on his cradle the dewdrops are shining, low lies his head with the beasts of the stall; angels adore him in slumber reclining, Maker and Monarch and Saviour of all. 3 Say, shall we yield him, in costly devotion odours of Edom and offerings divine, gems of the mountain and pearls of the ocean, myrrh from the forest and gold from the mine? 4 Vainly we offer each ample oblation, vainly with gifts would his favour secure; richer by far is the heart’s adoration, dearer to God are the prayers of the poor. 5 Brightest and best of the stars of the morning, dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid; gem of the East, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer is laid. Soldiers of Christ, arise

Author: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Hymnal: Church Hymnary (4th ed.) #515 (2005) Scripture: Luke 18:1 Lyrics: 1 Soldiers of Christ, arise, and put your armour on, strong in the strength which God supplies through his eternal Son; strong in the Lord of hosts, and in his mighty power; who in the strength of Jesus trusts is more than conqueror. 2 Stand, then, in his great might, with all his strength endued; and take, to arm you for the fight, the panoply of God. To keep your armour bright attend with constant care, still walking in your Captain's sight, and watching unto prayer. 3 From strength to strength go on, wrestle, and fight, and pray; tread all the powers of darkness down, and win the well-fought day, that, having all things done and all your conflicts passed, you may o'ercome through Christ alone, and stand complete at last. Prayer is the soul's sincere desire

Author: James Montgomery, 1771-1854 Hymnal: CPWI Hymnal #488 (2010) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Luke 18:1 Lyrics: 1 Prayer is the soul's sincere desire, uttered or unexpressed; the motion of a hidden fire that trembles in the breast. 2 Prayer is the burden of a sigh, the falling of a tear, the upward glancing of an eye when none but God is near. 3 Prayer is the simplest form of speech that infant lips can try; prayer the sublimest strains that reach the majesty on high. 4 Prayer is the contrite sinner's voice, returning from his ways, while angels in their songs rejoice, and cry: behold he prays! 5 Prayer is the Christian's vital breath, the Christian's native air, his watchword at the gates of death: he enters heaven with prayer. 6 O thou by whom we come to God, the Life, the Truth, the Way! The path of prayer thyself hast trod: Lord! Teach us how to pray.! Topics: General Hymns Prayer and Penitence Languages: English Tune Title: BEDFORD (Isometric)
