89. Was It You?

1 It was only a little word,
Just needed to cheer a heart;
And one who was faint it spurred
To play a much better part.
Was it you who said the word?
How little the effort it took!
But O how the heart it stirred
As it entered the waiting nook.

2 It was only a little smile,
But, filled to its full with cheer;
It lifted the eyes awhile
To skies that were bright and clear.
Was it you who gave the smile?
How little the effort it took!
But it cheered the sad heart the while,
As it entered the waiting nook.

3 It was only a little deed,
But lovingly, gladly done,
It filled a sad heart’s great need,—
A soul for the Master won.
Was it you who did the deed?
How little the effort it took!
But it gave the one faith to plead,
As it entered the waiting nook.

4 It was only a little way
With one who had lost his road;
It guided the one astray,
As onward he bore his load.
Was it you who walked the way?
How little the effort took!
But it added a brighter ray,
As it entered the waiting nook.
