Jesus my Redeemer lives

Author: Louisa Henrietta, Electress of Brandenburgh; Catherine Winkworth Hymnal: Lyra Germanica #40 (1861) Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Lyrics: Jesus my Redeemer lives, Christ my trust is dead no more; In the strength this knowledge gives Shall not all my tears be o'er, Though the night of Death be fraught Still with many an anxious thought? Jesus my Redeemer lives, And His life I once shall see; Bright the hope this promise gives, Where He is I too shall be. Shall I fear then? Can the Head Rise and leave the members dead? Close to Him my soul is bound In the bonds of Hope enclasped; Faith's strong hand this hold hath found, And the Rock hath firmly grasped: And no ban of death can part From our Lord the trusting heart. I shall see Him with these eyes, Him whom I shall surely know; Nort another shall I rise, With His love this heart shall glow; Only there shall disappear Weakness in and round me here. Ye who suffer, sigh, and moan, Fresh and glorious there shall reign; Earthly here the seed is sown, Heavenly it shall rise again; Natural here the death we die, Spiritual our life on high. Body, be thou of good cheer, In thy Saviour's care rejoice, Give not place to gloom and fear, Dead, thou yet shalt know His voice, When the final trump is heard, And the deaf cold grave is stirred. Laugh to scorn then death and hell, Laugh to scorn the gloomy grave; Caught into the air to dwell With the Lord who comes to save, We shall trample on our foes, Mortal weakness, fear and woes. Only see ye that your heart Rise betimes from earthly lust; Would ye there with Him have part, Here obey your Lord and trust, Fix your hearts beyond the skies, Whither ye yourselves would rise. Jesus, my Redeemer, lives

Author: Catherine Winkworth, 1827-78 Hymnal: Together in Song #366 (1999) Meter: 7.8.7.8.7.7 Lyrics: 1 Jesus, my Redeemer, lives, death is overcome and banished. O what joy this knowledge gives! Now my fears of death have vanished; though its solemn hour will come, he will take me safely home. 2 Jesus, my Redeemer, lives; likewise I to life shall waken. Endless life my Saviour gives; shall my courage then be shaken? I belong to him, my head; can he rise and leave me dead? 3 No, I am too closely bound by my hope to Christ for ever; faith's strong hand the rock has found, grasped it, and will leave it never; even death now cannot part from its Lord the trusting heart. 4 I am flesh and must return to the dust whence I am taken; but by faith I now discern that from death I shall awaken with my Saviour to abide in his glory, at his side. 5 I shall see God with these eyes, shall behold my blessèd Saviour; I myself shall ten arise, and remain with God for ever; glorified I shall ascend to the life that has no end. Hymnal: Evangelical Lutheran Hymnal. 9th ed. #a456 (1895) Lyrics: 1 Jesus, my Redeemer, lives, Christ, my Trust, is dead no more; In the strength this knowledge gives, Shall not all my fears be o'er? Calm, though the death's long night be fraught Still with many an anxious thought? 2 Jesus, my Redeemer, lives, And His life I once shall see; Bright the hope the promise gives, Where He is I too shall be. Shall I fear then? Can the Head Rise and leave the members dead? 3 Close to Him my soul is bound! In the bonds of hope enclasped; Faith's strong hand this soul hath found, And the Rock hath firmly grasped; Death shall ne'er my soul remove From her refuge in Thy love. 4 I shall see Him with these eyes-- Him whom I shall surely know; Not another shall I rise, With His love this heart shall glow; Only there shall disappear Weakness in and round me here. 5 Ye who suffer, sigh, and moan, Fresh and glorious there shall reign; Earthly here the seed is sown, Heavenly it shall rise again; Natural here the death we die, Spiritual our life on high. 6 Body, be thou of good cheer, In thy Savior's care rejoice; Give not place to gloom and fear-- Dead, thou yet shalt know His voice, When the final trump is heard, And the deaf, cold grave is stirred. 7 Laugh to scorn then death and hell, Laugh to scorn the gloomy grave; Caught into the air to dwell With the Lord who comes to save, We shall trample on our foes, Mortal weakness, fear and woes. 8 Only see ye that your heart Rise betimes from earthly lust; Would ye there with Him have part, Here obey your Lord and trust, Fix your hearts beyond the skies, Whither ye yourselves would rise.
