56. A Light Ever Shining at the Cross

1 When the earth was fill’d with darkness,
And the sun withheld its light,
The Disciples tho’t that Christ and all was lost;
When the earthquake shook the heavens,
In the fearful gloom of night,
Still a wondrous light was shining at the cross.

Refrain:
There’s a light ever shining at the cross,
There’s a light ever shining at the cross;
When the world is dark and drear,
And our souls are in despair,
There’s a light ever shining at the cross.

2 Saul went trav’ling to Damascus,
The Disciples there to bind,
And it seem’d the Christian hope was surely lost;
He was struck with total blindness,
And no solace could he find,
Till he found the light that’s shining at the cross. [Refrain]

3 Just a beggar lying helpless,
At the palace of the rich,
But the riches of the palace were as dross;
There’s a poverty in riches,
But a wealth of jewels rare
In the light that’s ever shining at the cross. [Refrain]

4 And my soul roam’d in the darkness,
In the fearful depths of sin,
On the waves of raging billows tempest tossed;
Till I bowed before my Saviour,
And surrendered all to Him,
And I found the light that’s shining at the cross. [Refrain]
