Jesu, lover of my soul

Author: Charles Wesley, 1707-1788 Hymnal: Common Praise #96a (2000) Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Scripture: Jeremiah 2:13 Lyrics: 1 Jesu, lover of my soul, let me to thy bosom fly, while the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high: hide me, O my Saviour, hide, till the storm of life is past; safe into the haven guide, O receive my soul at last. 2 Other refuge have I none, hangs my helpless soul on thee; leave, ah, leave me not alone, still support and comfort me. All my trust on thee is stayed, all my help from thee I bring; cover my defenceless head with the shadow of thy wing. 3 Thou, O Christ, art all I want; more than all in thee I find; raise the fallen, cheer the faint, heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is thy name, I am all unrighteousness; false and full of sin I am, thou art full of truth and grace. 4 Plenteous grace with thee is found, grace to cover all my sin; let the healing streams abound, make and keep me pure within. Thou of life the fountain art: freely let me take of thee, spring thou up within my heart, rise to all eternity. Glorious things of thee are spoken

Author: John Newton, 1725-1807 Hymnal: Common Praise #435a (2000) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Scripture: Jeremiah 2:13 Lyrics: 1 Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God; he whose word cannot be broken formed thee for his own abode. On the Rock of ages founded, what can shake thy sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded, thou may'st smile at all thy foes. 2 See, the streams of living waters, springing from eternal love, well supply thy sons and daughters, and all fear of want remove. Who can faint while such a river ever flows their thirst to assuage: grace which, like the Lord the giver, never fails from age to age? *3 Round each habitation hovering, see the cloud and fire appear for a glory and a covering, showing that the Lord is near. Thus they march, the pillar leading, light by night and shade by day; daily on the manna feeding which he gives them when they pray. 4 Saviour, if of Zion's city I through grace a member am, let the world deride or pity, I will glory in thy name. Fading is the worldling's pleasure, all his boasted pomp and show; solid joys and lasting treasure, none but Zion's children know. O how happy are they, Who their Saviour obey

Hymnal: The Voice of Praise #1051 (1873) Meter: Irregular Scripture: Jeremiah 2:2 Lyrics: 1 O how happy are they, Who their Saviour obey, And have laid up their treasures above! Tongue can not express The sweet comforts and peace Of a soul in its earliest love. 2 That sweet comfort was mine When the favor divine I found in the blood of the Lamb; When my heart it believed, What a joy I received, What a heaven in Jesus' name. 3 'Twas a heaven below, My Redeemer to know; The angels could do nothing more Than to fall at his feet, And the story repeat, And the lover of sinners adore. 4 Jesus, all the day long, Was my joy and my song: O that all his salvation might see! He hath loved me, I cried, He hath suffered and died, To redeem such a rebel as me. 5 On the wings of his love I was carried above All sin, and temptation, and pain: I could not believe That I ever should grieve-- That I ever should suffer again. 6 I rode on the sky, Freely justified I, Nor envied Elijah his seat; My soul mounted higher In a chariot of fire, And the moon it was under my feet. 7 O the rapturous height Of that holy delight, Which I felt in the life-giving blood, Of my Saviour possessed, I was perfectly blest, As if filled with the fullness of God. How oft, alas! this wretched heart

Author: Mrs. Steele Hymnal: The Voice of Praise #410 (1873) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Jeremiah 2:13 Lyrics: 1 How oft, alas! this wretched heart Has wandered from the Lord! How oft my roving thoughts depart, Forgetful of his word! 2 Yet sovereign mercy calls Return; Dear Lord, and may I come? My vile ingratitude I mourn; Oh, take the wanderer home. 3 And canst thou, wilt thou yet forgive, And bid my crimes remove? And shall a pardoned rebel live To speak thy wondrous love? 4 Thy pardoning love, so free, so sweet, Blest Saviour, I adore; Oh, keep me at thy sacred feet, And let me rove no more. God of mercy! God of grace!

Author: Taylor Hymnal: The Voice of Praise #401 (1873) Meter: 7.7.7.7 Scripture: Jeremiah 2:13 Lyrics: 1 God of mercy! God of grace! Hear our sad, repentant songs; Oh, restore thy suppliant race, Thou to whom our praise belongs-- 2 Deep regret for follies past, Talents wasted, time misspent; Hearts debased by worldly cares, Thankless for the blessings lent. 3 Foolish fears, and fond desires, Vain regrets, for things as vain, Lips too seldom taught to praise, Oft to murmur and complain-- 4 These, and every secret fault, Filled with grief and shame, we own; Humbled at thy feet we lie, Seeking pardon from thy throne! 5 God of mercy! God of grace! Hear our sad, repentant songs; Oh, restore thy suppliant race, Thou to whom our praise belongs. Topics: The Christian System Repentance and Faith; Mercy and Grace
