Psalm 49 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 44 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 49:6-14 First Line: Why doth the man of riches grow Lyrics: Why doth the man of riches grow To insolence and pride, To see his wealth and honors flow With every rising tide? [Why doth he treat the poor with scorn, Made of the self-same clay, And boast as though his flesh was born Of better dust than they?] Not all his treasures can procure His soul a short reprieve, Redeem from death one guilty hour, Or make his brother live. [Life is a blessing can't be sold, The ransom is too high; Justice will ne'er be bribed with gold, That man may never die.] He sees the brutish and the wise, The tim'rous and the brave, Quit their possessions, close their eyes, And hasten to the grave. Yet 'tis his inward thought and pride,- My house shall ever stand And that my name may long abide, I'll give it to my land." Vain are his thoughts, his hopes are lost, How soon his memory dies! His name is written in the dust Where his own carcass lies. This is the folly of their way; And yet their sons, as vain, Approve the words their fathers say, And act their works again. Men void of wisdom and of grace, If honor raise them high, Live like the beast, a thoughtless race, And like the beast they die. [Laid in the grave like silly sheep, Death feeds upon them there, Till the last trumpet break their sleep In terror and despair.] Topics: Resurrection of the saints; Death of saints and sinners; Despair and hope in death; Hope and despair in death; Envy and unbelief cured; Prosperous sinners cursed; Mortality of man; Death and pride; Death and the resurrection; Life and riches, their vanity; Pride and death; Resurrection and death; Riches Their Vanity; Vanity of life and riches

Psalm 49

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 29 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 49 First Line: Why do the proud insult the poor Lyrics: Why do the proud insult the poor, And boast the large estates they have? How vain are riches to secure Their haughty owners from the grave! They can't redeem one hour from death, With all the wealth in which they trust; Nor give a dying brother breath, When God commands him down to dust. There the dark earth and dismal shade Shall clasp their naked bodies round; That flesh, so delicately fed, Lies cold and moulders in the ground. Like thoughtless sheep the sinner dies, Laid in the grave for worms to eat: The saints shall in the morning rise, And find th' oppressor at their feet. His honors perish in the dust, And pomp and beauty, birth and blood: That glorious day exalts the just To full dominion o'er the proud. My Savior shall my life restore, And raise me from my dark abode; My flesh and soul shall part no more, But dwell for ever near my God. Topics: Resurrection of the saints; Death of saints and sinners; Despair and hope in death; Hope and despair in death; Envy and unbelief cured; Prosperous sinners cursed; Mortality of man; Death and pride; Death and the resurrection; Life and riches, their vanity; Pride and death; Resurrection and death; Riches Their Vanity; Vanity of life and riches

The last great day shall change the scene; When will that hour appear? When shall the just revive, and reign O'er all that scorned them here? God will my naked soul receive, When sep'rate from the flesh; And break the prison of the grave, To raise my bones afresh. Heav'n is my everlasting home, Th' inheritance is sure: Let men of pride their rage resume, But I'll repine no more. Hymn 24

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 11 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 49:6 First Line: In vain the wealthy mortals toil Lyrics: In vain the wealthy mortals toil, And heap their shining dust in vain, Look down and scorn the humble poor, And boast their lofty hills of gain. Their golden cordials cannot ease Their pained hearts or aching heads, Nor fright nor bribe approaching death From glitt'ring roofs and downy beds. The ling'ring, the unwilling soul The dismal summons must obey, And bid a long, a sad farewell To the pale lump of lifeless clay. Thence they are huddled to the grave, Where kings and slaves have equal thrones; Their bones without distinction lie Amongst the heap of meaner bones.

Psalm 49: Hear this, all people, and give ear

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 7 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 49 First Line: Hear this, all people, and give ear Lyrics: 1Hear this, all people, and give ear, all in the world that dwell; 2Both low and high, both rich and poor. 3My mouth shall wisdom tell: My heart shall knowledge meditate. 4I will incline mine ear To parables, and on the harp my sayings dark declare. 5Amidst those days that evil be, why should I, fearing, doubt? When of my heels th’ iniquity shall compass me about. 6Whoe’er they be that in their wealth their confidence do pitch, And boast themselves, because they are become exceeding rich: 7Yet none of these his brother can redeem by any way; Nor can he unto God for him sufficient ransom pay, 8(Their soul’s redemption precious is, and it can never be,) 9That still he should for ever live, and not corruption see. 10For why? he seeth that wise men die, and brutish fools also Do perish; and their wealth, when dead, to others they let go. 11Their inward thought is, that their house and dwelling-places shall Stand through all ages; they their lands by their own names do call. 12But yet in honour shall not man abide continually; But passing hence, may be compar’d unto the beasts that die. 13Thus brutish folly plainly is their wisdom and their way; Yet their posterity approve what they do fondly say. 14Like sheep they in the grave are laid, and death shall them devour; And in the morning upright men shall over them have pow’r: Their beauty from their dwelling shall consume within the grave. 15But from hell’s hand God will me free, for he shall me receive. 16Be thou not then afraid when one enriched thou dost see, Nor when the glory of his house advanced is on high: 17For he shall carry nothing hence when death his days doth end; Nor shall his glory after him into the grave descend. 18Although he his own soul did bless whilst he on earth did live; (And when thou to thyself dost well, men will thee praises give;) 19He to his fathers’ race shall go, they never shall see light. 20Man honour’d wanting knowledge is like beasts that perish quite.

To the chief Musician. A Psalm for the Sons of Korah

Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 49 First Line: Hear this all people, and give ear Lyrics: 1 Hear this all people, and give ear, all in the world that dwell 2 Sons both of low and higher men, The rich and poor as well. 3 I with my mouth variety Of wisdom will impart; Of understanding much shall be the musing of my heart. 4 Unto a speech proverbial I will encline mine ear; I will upon the harp withal My doctrine dark declare. 5 Why should I be at all afraid In days that evil be? When that my heels iniquity About shall compass me. [2] 6 Those men that make their great estates Their stay to trust unto; Who in the plenty of their wealth Themselves do boast also: 7 There's not a man of them that can By any means redeem His brother, nor to God can give A ransom meet for him. 8 (So dear their souls redemption is, And ever ceaseth it.) 9 That he should still for ever live, And never see the pit. 10 For he doth see that wise men die, The fool and brutish too Do perish; and their rich estate To others leave they do. 11 They think their houses are for aye, To generations all Their dwelling places; and their lands They by their names do call. 12 But man in honour being set Abideth not at night; But he becometh like unto The beast that perish quite. 13 This way of theirs their folly is; Yet their posterity Delighting in that which they say Approve it veh'mently. 14 Like sheep so are they laid in grave, Death shall them feed upon; And th' upright over them i' th' morn Shall have dominion. And from the place whereas they dwell, The beauty which they have Shall utterly consume away Within the rotting grave. 15 But surely God redemption Unto my soul will give, Ev'n from the grave's prevailing pow'r, For he will me receive. [3] 16 Be not afraid when as a man In wealth is made to grow; And when the glory of his house Abundantly doth flow. 17 For when as he doth come to die, Nought shall he take away: Nor shall there after him descend His glorious array. 18 Although in his life time his soul For blessed he did take, And men will praise thee when as thou Much of thy self dost make. 19 He shall go to his fathers face, They never shall see light. 20 In honour man that knows not, is Like beasts that perish quite.
