Spiritual Wants

Author: C. Wesley Hymnal: A Book of Hymns for Public and Private Devotion (15th ed.) #225 (1866) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Hymnal Title: A Book of Hymns for Public and Private Devotion (15th ed.) First Line: My God, my strength, my hope Lyrics: My God, my strength, my hope, On Thee I cast my care, With humble confidence look up, And know Thou hear’st my prayer. Give me on Thee to wait, Till I can all things do; On Thee, almighty to create, Almighty to renew. I want a sober mind, A self-renouncing will, That tramples down and casts behind The baits of pleasing ill; 188 A soul inured to pain, To hardship, grief, and loss, Bold to take up, firm to sustain, The consecrated cross. I want a godly fear, A quick-discerning eye, That looks to Thee when sin is near, And bids the tempter fly; A spirit still prepared, And armed with jealous care, Forever standing on its guard, And watching unto prayer. I want a true regard, A single, steady aim, Unmoved by threatening or reward, To Thee and Thy great name; This blessing above all, Always to pray, I want: Out of the deep on Thee to call, And never, never faint. I rest upon Thy word; The promise is for me; My succor and salvation, Lord, Shall surely come from Thee; But let me still abide, Nor from my hope remove, Till Thou my patient spirit guide Into Thy perfect love. Joseph Haydn

1732 - 1809 Person Name: Haydn Hymnal Title: Book of Worship Composer of "FURTH" in Book of Worship Franz Joseph Haydn (b. Rohrau, Austria, 1732; d. Vienna, Austria, 1809) Haydn's life was relatively uneventful, but his artistic legacy was truly astounding. He began his musical career as a choirboy in St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna, spent some years in that city making a precarious living as a music teacher and composer, and then served as music director for the Esterhazy family from 1761 to 1790. Haydn became a most productive and widely respected composer of symphonies, chamber music, and piano sonatas. In his retirement years he took two extended tours to England, which resulted in his "London" symphonies and (because of G. F. Handel's influence) in oratorios. Haydn's church music includes six great Masses and a few original hymn tunes. Hymnal editors have also arranged hymn tunes from various themes in Haydn's music. Bert Polman

William Henry Monk

1823 - 1889 Person Name: William Henry Monk (1823- ) Hymnal Title: Carmina Sanctorum, a selection of hymns and songs of praise with tunes Composer of "JESUS SALVATOR" in Carmina Sanctorum, a selection of hymns and songs of praise with tunes William H. Monk (b. Brompton, London, England, 1823; d. London, 1889) is best known for his music editing of Hymns Ancient and Modern (1861, 1868; 1875, and 1889 editions). He also adapted music from plainsong and added accompaniments for Introits for Use Throughout the Year, a book issued with that famous hymnal. Beginning in his teenage years, Monk held a number of musical positions. He became choirmaster at King's College in London in 1847 and was organist and choirmaster at St. Matthias, Stoke Newington, from 1852 to 1889, where he was influenced by the Oxford Movement. At St. Matthias, Monk also began daily choral services with the choir leading the congregation in music chosen according to the church year, including psalms chanted to plainsong. He composed over fifty hymn tunes and edited The Scottish Hymnal (1872 edition) and Wordsworth's Hymns for the Holy Year (1862) as well as the periodical Parish Choir (1840-1851). Bert Polman
