The Day Is Surely Drawing Near

Author: B. Ringwaldt, 1532-99; P. A. Peter, 1832-1919 Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 34 hymnals Hymnal Title: Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary Lyrics: 1 The day is surely drawing near When God's Son, the Anointed, Shall with great majesty appear As Judge of all appointed. All mirth and laughter then shall cease When flames on flames will still increase, As Scripture truly teacheth. 2 A trumpet loud shall then resound And all the earth be shaken. Then all who in their graves are found Shall from their sleep awaken; But all that live shall in that hour By the Almighty's boundless pow'r Be changed at His commanding. 3 A book is opened then to all, A record truly telling What each hath done, both great and small, When he on earth was dwelling; And ev'ry heart be clearly seen, And all be known as they have been In thoughts and words and actions. 4 Then woe to those who scorned the Lord And sought but carnal pleasures, Who here despised His precious Word And loved their earthly treasures! With shame and trembling they will stand And at the Judge's stern command To Satan be delivered. 5 O Jesus, who my debt didst pay And for my sin wast smitten; Within the Book of Life, O may My name be also written! I will not doubt; I trust in Thee, From Satan Thou hast made me free And from all condemnation. 6 Therefore my Intercessor be And for Thy blood and merit Declare my name from judgment free With all who life inherit, That I may see Thee face to face With all Thy saints in that blest place Which Thou for us hast purchased. 7 O Jesus Christ, do not delay, But hasten our salvation; We often tremble on our way In fear and tribulation. Then hear us when we cry to Thee; Come, mighty Judge, and make us free From ev'ry evil! Amen. Topics: Judgment Day; Trinity 26 Used With Tune: ES IST GEWISSLICH

The Day Is Surely Drawing Near

Author: Bartholomaeus Ringwalt Hymnal: American Lutheran Hymnal #321 (1930) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Hymnal Title: American Lutheran Hymnal Lyrics: 1 The day is surely drawing near When Christ, the Lord's Anointed, In might and glory shall appear, As Judge of all appointed. The time of mirth shall then expire, When all shall be consumed by fire, As Holy Scripture tells us. 2 The trump of God shall then resound, And all the earth be shaken; The dead who in thegraves are found Shall then to life awaken, And all who faithful here abide Shall be transformed and glorified By Christ's almighty working. 3 The Judge shall then a scroll unfold, His records truly telling What all have done, both young and old, While in the body dwelling. All secrets then shall be disclosed And ev'ry hidden thought exposed That was conceived in darkness. 4 Then woe to all who scorned the Lord And sought but carnal pleasures, Who loathed to hear His holy Word, Enthralled by earthly treasures. They shall not in the judgment stand, But at the righteous King's command With Satan have their portion. 5 Lord Jesus, Victor in the strife, For my transgressions smitten, O grant that in the book of life My name be also written. Nor will I doubt that I am free From Satan's rule, O Lord, thro' Thee, The Source of our salvation. Topics: The Christian Life Judgment Languages: English Tune Title: MONMOUTH

The day is surely drawing near

Hymnal: Christian Hymns #230 (1898) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Hymnal Title: Christian Hymns Lyrics: 1 The day is surely drawing near, When God's Son, the Anointed, Will with great majesty appear, As Judge of all appointed. All mirth and laughter then shall cease, When flames on flames will still increase, As the Apostle teacheth. 2 A trumpet loud will then resound, And the whole earth be shaken; Then all who in their graves are found Shall from their sleep awaken; But all that live will in that hour, By the Almighty's boundless power, Be changed at His commanding. 3 A book is opened then to all, A record truly telling What each hath done, both great and small, When he on earth was dwelling. And every heart is clearly seen, And all are known as they have been, In thoughts and words and actions. 4 Then woe to those who scorned the Lord, And sought but carnal pleasures, Who here despised His precious Word, And loved their earthly treasures; With shame and trembling they will stand, And at the Judge's stern command Must leave the Lord forever. 5 O may my name, dear Lord, be found, Free from all condemnation, For Thy death's sake, Thy pains and wounds, In Thy book of salvation. I will not doubt--I trust in Thee-- From Satan Thou hast made me free, And from all condemnation. 6 Therefore my intercessor be, And for Thy death and merit Declare my name from judgment free, With all who life inherit, That I may see Thee face to face, With all Thy saints, in that blest place, Which Thou for us hast purchased. 7 Lord Jesus Christ, do not delay, O hasten our salvation! We often tremble on our way In fear and tribulation. Then hear us when we cry to Thee; Come, mighty Judge, come, make us free From every evil. Amen! Nicolaus Decius

1485 - 1541 Person Name: Nicolaus Decius, ca. 1485-1541 Hymnal Title: Ambassador Hymnal Attributed of "ALLEIN GOTT IN DER HÖH" in Ambassador Hymnal Decius, Nicolaus (Nicolaus a Curia or von Hofe, otherwise Hovesch, seems to have been a native of Hof, in Upper Franconia, Bavaria, and to have been originally called Tech. He became a monk, and was in 1519 Probst of the cloister at Steterburg, near Wolfenbüttel. Becoming favourable to the opinions of Luther, he left Steterburg in July, 1522, and went to Brunswick, where he was appointed a master in the St. Katherine and Egidien School. In 1523 he was invited by the burgesses of Stettin to labour there as an Evangelical preacher along with Paulus von Rhode. He became preacher at the Church of St. Nicholas; was probably instituted by the Town Council in 1526, when von Rhode was instituted to St. Jacob's; and at the visitation in 1535 was recognized as pastor of St. Nicholas'. He died suddenly at Stettin, March 21, 1541, with some suspicion of being poisoned by his enemies of the Roman Catholic faction (Koch, i. 419-421, 471, 472; ii. 483; Allg. Deutsche Biography, iii. 791-793).He seems to have been a popular preacher and a good musician. Three hymns are ascribed to him. These are versions of the “Sanctus," the "Gloria in excelsis," and the "Agnus Dei." The second and third are noted under these Latin first lines. He is also said to have composed or adapted the melodies set to them.      [Rev. James Mearns, M.A.] -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

Born in Trondheim, he studied theology in Oslo where he remained the rest of his life. In 1839 he succeeded his brother as the organist and cantor of Oslo Cathedral, a position he held for 48 years up until his death. Lindeman was appointed Knight of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav, and was invited to both help christen the new organ in Royal Albert Hall in London, as well as compose for the coronation of King Oscar II and Queen Sophie of Sweden. In 1883, he and his son started the Organist School in Oslo.
