E. E. Hewitt

1851 - 1920 Author of "Stand Fast in the Faith" in Rodeheaver's Gospel Anthems No. 1 Pseudonym: Li­die H. Ed­munds. Eliza Edmunds Hewitt was born in Philadelphia 28 June 1851. She was educated in the public schools and after graduation from high school became a teacher. However, she developed a spinal malady which cut short her career and made her a shut-in for many years. During her convalescence, she studied English literature. She felt a need to be useful to her church and began writing poems for the primary department. she went on to teach Sunday school, take an active part in the Philadelphia Elementary Union and become Superintendent of the primary department of Calvin Presbyterian Church. 1856 - 1932 Composer of "[Stand fast in the faith, all ye people of God]" in Rodeheaver's Gospel Anthems No. 1 Pseudonyms: C. D. Emerson, Charlotte G. Homer, S. B. Jackson, A. W. Lawrence, Jennie Ree ============= For the first seventeen years of his life Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (b. Wilton, IA, 1856; d. Los Angeles, CA, 1932) lived on an Iowa farm, where friends and neighbors often gathered to sing. Gabriel accompanied them on the family reed organ he had taught himself to play. At the age of sixteen he began teaching singing in schools (following in his father's footsteps) and soon was acclaimed as a fine teacher and composer. He moved to California in 1887 and served as Sunday school music director at the Grace Methodist Church in San Francisco. After moving to Chicago in 1892, Gabriel edited numerous collections of anthems, cantatas, and a large number of songbooks for the Homer Rodeheaver, Hope, and E. O. Excell publishing companies. He composed hundreds of tunes and texts, at times using pseudonyms such as Charlotte G. Homer. The total number of his compositions is estimated at about seven thousand. I. G. Martin

1862 - 1957 Person Name: Isaiah G. Martin Author of "Oneness in Jesus" Martin, Isaiah Guyman. (Gentry County, Missouri, April 18, 1862--August 23, 1957, Pasadena, California). Richmond School of Music; Missouri (now Kansas) Wesleyan; Iliff School of Theology. Married in 1905, two sons, one daughter. Converted at age 12, joined the Baptist Church; 1893 joined the Methodist Church and began his ministry. 1903 joined the Church of the Nazarene and in 1905 was appointed District Superintendent of "all the territory east of the Rocky Mountains." Pastored First Church of the Nazarene, Chicago; evangelist. Tenor soloist; composed songs as a hobby (around 200), frequently while playing the reed organ. "Eastern Gate" is probably his most familiar hymn. It was written as a tribute to Dr. P.F. Bresee's traditional farewell at gatherings of the Church of the Nazarene, "We will meet at the Eastern Gate." According to Martin, "One of the old-timers was trying to get a tune for some words he had written, but couldn't put it over, so I got to humming a tune, which turned out to be 'Eastern Gate.'" --E. Edward Krusen Ziegler

1903 - 2003 Author of "Rejoice, All Peoples of the Earth" in Fifteen New Bible Hymns Ziegler, Edward Krusen. Held many pastorates as well as posts in the Church of the Brethren; missionary in India, 1931-1939; Director of Evangelism, 1951-1955; Moderator, 1959-1960. --The Hymn Society, DNAH Archives ========================= Edward Krusen Ziegler is pastor of the Church of the Brethren in Oakton, Virginia. This is the sixth pastorate which he has held in his denomination. In addition to his service in the pastorate, he has held important and varied posts in the Church of the Brethren: Missionary in India 1931-1939; Director of Evangelism 1951-1955; Moderator 1959-1960. He is the author of several books and the 250th Anniversary Hymn of his denomination. He is also the author of one of the Hymn Society's Stewardship Hymns. He is editor of Brethren Life and Thought. On December 1, 1966, Mr. Ziegler will become pastor of the Church of the Brethren in Bakersfield, California. --Fifteen New Bible Hymns, 1961. Used by permission.

1832 - 1895 Person Name: Willam Evander Penn Composer of "[When the people of all nations]" in The Cyber Hymnal Penn, William Evander. (Near village of Old Jefferson, Rutherford County, Tennessee, August 11, 1832--April 29, 1895, Eureka Springs, Arkansas). Southern Baptist. Evangelist in Texas and other states, 1875-1895. Compiled three hymnals titled Harvest Bells (1881, 1884, 1887) for use in his meetings. His hymns were primarily revivalistic in emphasis. His finest hymn, "There is a rock in a weary land, Its shadow falls on the burning sand" was paid the compliment of being reworked and issued under the name of Edward Husband in D.B. Towner's Revival Hymns (Chicago, 1905). He and his wife Corilla Frances Sayle adopted three children. Ordained December 4, 1880. --David W.
