The Beatitudes

Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: Blessed are the poor in spirit, truly heaven is their reward Refrain First Line: Blessed are the poor in spirit Lyrics: RESPONSE Blessed are the poor in spirit, truly heaven is their reward. R When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. R Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. R Text Sources: Matthew 5:1-12; Response, Matthew 5:3, alt. [NRSV]

Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit

Author: Norman Elliott Hymnal: Moravian Book of Worship #595 (1995) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Lyrics: 1 Blessed are the poor in spirit, claiming nothing as their own, but as giv'n them by their Father that his goodness may be shown. Blessed are they who share the sorrow of their God's unchanging love; they shall know his presence with them and his promised comfort prove. 2 Blessed are the strong but gentle, trained to serve a higher will, wise to know th'eternal purpose which their Father shall fulfill. Blessed are they who with true passion strive to make the right prevail, for the earth is God's possession and his purpose will not fail. 3 Blessed are they who show their mercy to the guilty and the poor, for to them, set free from judgment, shall be opened heaven's door. Blessed, the sincere and truthful from the lie's deception free, for the God of truth and beauty they in joy will surely see. 4 Blessed are the brave and peaceful, bringing peace where'er they live, God shall own them as his children and through them his peace will give. All for love and truth who suffer, in your God rejoice and sing; he, the end of all your striving, he, your Father, Lord and King. F. E. Belden

1858 - 1945 Composer of "MOUNT OLIVE" in Christ in Song Belden was born in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1858. He began writing music in his late teenage years after moving to California with his family. For health reasons he later moved to Colorado. He returned to Battle Creek with his wife in the early 1880s, and there he became involved in Adventist Church publishing. F. E. Belden wrote many hymn tunes, gospel songs, and related texts in the early years of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Belden was able to rapidly write both music and poetry together which enabled him to write a song to fit a sermon while it was still being delivered. He also wrote songs for evangelist Billy Sunday. Though Belden’s later years were marred by misunderstandings with the church leadership over his royalties, he did donate his papers and manuscripts to the church’s seminary at his death. He died on December 2, 1945 in Battle Creek, Michigan. N.N., Hymnary. Source: http://www.hymntime.com/tch/bio/b/e/l/belden_fe.htm
