Nothing but Leaves

Author: William J. Henry Meter: 7.7.7.6.7.7.7.6 with refrain Appears in 3 hymnals First Line: Nothing but leaves I've gathered Refrain First Line: Gathering nothing but leaves Lyrics: 1 Nothing but leaves I’ve gathered, Yes, nothing but worthless leaves, When from the field of labor Others bring golden sheaves; Then in the day of judgment Shall I be found with tares, When God rewards the faithful With crowns of shining stars. Refrain: Gathering nothing but leaves, Gathering nothing but leaves; Spending life’s precious moments Gathering nothing but leaves. 2 Nothing but leaves I’ve gathered, So sad, but, alas, ’tis true, What I have done I never, Nevermore can undo; Past is the harvest season, The summer has come and gone, Reaping for future burning The thorns and briars I’ve sown. [Refrain] 3 Nothing but leaves I’ve gathered, Dear sinner, oh, hear the cry; Swiftly your days are passing, Soon you’ll be called to die; What are the seeds you’re sowing? What will you reap at last? Sometime you’ll surely gather Sheaves from the seeds you’ve cast. [Refrain] Select Hymns, 1911 (Timeless Truths) Used With Tune: [Nothing but leaves I've gathered]

He became a very active evangelist and song writer, holding meetings in every American state and in Britain. --www.hymntime.com/tch ================== The song, “I Cannot Be Idle,” was written by William J. Henry, in 1897. He got saved from his sins at the age of 20 (in 1882), and he wrote this song at the age of 35 years old. He got saved at an evangelistic meeting, took his stand with the church of God, and he was called to the ministry nine years later, in 1891. Two years later (at the age of 31 years old), he made his first trip to spread the gospel overseas. A small congregation in Liverpool, England, was started through his laboring. Henry could not be idle! Later, he started a congregation in Springfield, Missouri, where he pastored for 13 years. He wrote more than 300 songs. At the age of 73 years old, Henry and his wife wrote: “To God be all the glory! This has been the busiest and happiest time of our lives. We are both enjoying the best of health and are decided to do more for [God] in the future.” He died 20 years later. --www.churchofgodfca.com/
