Shirley Erena Murray

1931 - 2020 Author of "Take My Gifts and Let Me Love You" in Celebrating Grace Hymnal Shirley Erena Murray (b. Invercargill, New Zealand, 1931) studied music as an undergraduate but received a master’s degree (with honors) in classics and French from Otago University. Her upbringing was Methodist, but she became a Presbyterian when she married the Reverend John Stewart Murray, who was a moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. Shirley began her career as a teacher of languages, but she became more active in Amnesty International, and for eight years she served the Labor Party Research Unit of Parliament. Her involvement in these organizations has enriched her writing of hymns, which address human rights, women’s concerns, justice, peace, the integrity of creation, and the unity of the church. Many of her hymns have been performed in CCA and WCC assemblies. In recognition for her service as a writer of hymns, the New Zealand government honored her as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit on the Queen’s birthday on 3 June 2001. Through Hope Publishing House, Murray has published three collections of her hymns: In Every Corner Sing (eighty-four hymns, 1992), Everyday in Your Spirit (forty-one hymns, 1996), and Faith Makes the Song (fifty hymns, 2002). The New Zealand Hymnbook Trust, for which she worked for a long time, has also published many of her texts (cf. back cover, Faith Makes the Song). In 2009, Otaga University conferred on her an honorary doctorate in literature for her contribution to the art of hymn writing. Eva B. Lloyd

1912 - 2006 Author of "Consagraos, Oh Cristianos" in Himnario Bautista Born: March 9, 1912, Jameson, Missouri. Died: August 26, 2006, Parkdale Manor, Maryville, Missouri. Buried: Oak Hill Cemetery, Maryville, Missouri. Lloyd was educated at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville (BS) and the University of Missouri Kansas City (MA). She taught in Missouri elementary and secondary schools, and English literature 15 years at Northwest Missouri State University. She also directed the Women’s Mission Union. Helen Otte

b. 1931 Versifier of "Mighty Mortal, Boasting Evil" in Psalter Hymnal (Gray) Helen Ann (Brink) Otte Walter (b. Grand Rapids, MI, 1931) versified this psalm in 1982 for the Psalter Hymnal. She received her education at Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and has worked as a teacher, proofreader, and librarian. She was a member of the Poets' Workshop that worked with the revision committee to prepare psalm versifications for the 1987 Psalter Hymnal. After her first husband died and she remarried, she remained active as a freelance writer, especially of children's stories and dramas, some of which have been published in Reformed Worship under the name Helen Walter. Adolfo Robleto

1917 - 1994 Translator of "A Tu Iglesia, Oh Dios, Da Vida" in Himnario Bautista Born: January 4, 1917, Managua, Nicaragua. Died: April 1, 1994, Texas. Pseudonyms: Daniel R. Diaz Pablo Filós Robleto attended the Colegio Bautista in Managua (graduated 1940), and the Baptist Seminary in New Orleans, Louisiana, and pastored churches in Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Texas. He also directed the Department of Administration of Churches and Pastoral Leadership, edited The Christian Home for the Casa Bautista de Publicaciones, and translated about 200 hymns from English to Spanish.
