A little child the Saviour came

Author: William Robertson (1820-1864) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 54 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 49:15-16 Lyrics: 1 A little child the Saviour came, the mighty God was still his name, and angels worshipped as he lay the seeming infant of a day. 2 He who, a little child, began to show the world God's loving plan, proclaims from heaven the message free, 'Let little children come to me.' 3 We bring them, Lord, and with the sign of sprinkled water name them thine: their souls with saving grace endow; baptize them with thy Spirit now. 4 O give thine angels charge, good Lord, them safely in thy way to guard; thy blessing on their lives command, and write their names upon thy hand. 5 O thou, who by an infant's tongue dost hear thy perfect glory sung, may these, with all the heavenly host, praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. A living, loving, lasting word

Author: A. L. Waring Meter: 8.8.6.8.8.6 Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 49:13 Lyrics: A living, loving, lasting word, My listening ear believing heard, While bending down in prayer; Like a sweet breeze that none can stay, It passed my soul upon its way, And left a blessing there. Then joyful thoughts that come and go, By paths the holy angels know, Encamped around my soul; As in a dream of blest repose, Mid withered reeds a river rose, And through the desert stole. I lifted up my eyes to see — The wilderness was glad for me, Its thorns were bright with bloom; And onward travellers still in sight, Marked out a path of shining light, And shade unmixed with gloom. O sweet the strains of those before, “The weary knees are weak no more, The faithful heart is strong;” But sweeter, nearer, from above, That word of everlasting love, The promise and the song.
