Count Well the Cost

Author: Alexander Mack Sr.; Ora W. Graber Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8 Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Mark 8:31-38 First Line: “Count well the cost,” Christ Jesus says Lyrics: 1 “Count well the cost,” Christ Jesus says, “when you lay the foundation.” Are you resolved, though all seem lost, to risk your reputation, your self, your wealth, for Christ the Lord, as you now give your solemn word? 2 Into Christ’s death be buried now through baptism’s joyous union. No selfish claim should you allow if you desire communion when Christ’s redeemed together meet, the bread of fellowship to eat. 3 Within the church’s warm embrace the child of God is molded. God’s Spirit lights the infant face, and in God’s grace is folded. With childlike steps, Christ’s plan we trace, till we grow up in godly grace. 4 In Christian growth we are matured, of fruitful vines a token. That this good growth may be assured ofttimes to us is broken the bread of fellowship replete when Christ’s redeemed together meet. Topics: Baptism; Body of Christ; Church; Commitment; Discipleship; Heritage Church of the Brethren; Lent Used With Tune: MACH’S MIT MIR / EISENACH Text Sources: “Überschlag die Kost,” Geistreiches Gesang-Buch…, 1720; trans. Community of Christ

Author: Shirley Erena Murray, 1931- Meter: 6.6.8.4 D Appears in 6 hymnals Scripture: Mark 8:34 Lyrics: 1 Community of Christ, who make the cross your own, live out your creed and risk your life for God alone: the God who wears your face, to whom all worlds belong, whose children are of every race and every song. 2 Community of Christ, look past the Church's door and see the refugee, the hungry, and the poor. Take hands with the oppressed, the jobless in your street, take towel and water, that you wash your neighbor's feet. 3 Community of Christ, through whom the word must sound -- cry out for justice and for peace the whole world round: disarm the powers that war and all that can destroy, turn bombs to bread, and tears of anguish into joy. 4 When menace melts away, so shall God's will be done, the climate of the world be peace and Christ its sun; our currency be love and kindliness our law, our food and faith be shared as one for evermore. Used With Tune: LEONI

Author: Henry Alford, 1810-1871 Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 727 hymnals Scripture: Mark 8:38 Lyrics: 1 Come, ye thankful people, come, raise the song of harvest home; all is safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin; God, our Maker, doth provide for our wants to be supplied. Come, to God's own temple, come: raise the song of harvest home. 2 All the world is God's own field, fruit unto God's praise to yield; wheat and weeds together sown, unto joy or sorrow grown; first the blade and then the ear, then the full corn shall appear. Lord of harvest, grant that we wholesome grain and pure may be. 3 For the Lord our God shall come and shall take the harvest home; from the field shall in that day all offences purge away, give the angels charge at last in the fire the tares to cast, but the fruitful ears to store in God's storehouse evermore. 4 Even so, Lord, quickly come to thy final harvest home: gather thou thy people in, free from sorrow, free from sin; there, forever purified, in thy presence to abide. Come, with all thine angels, come: raise the glorious harvest home.
