From deepest woe I cry to thee

Author: Martin Luther, 1483-1546; Catherine Winkworth, 1827-1878 Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 33 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 130 Lyrics: 1. From deepest woe I cry to thee; Lord, hear me, I implore thee! Bend down thy gracious ear to me; I lay my sins before thee. If thou rememberest every sin, if nought but just reward we win, could we abide thy presence? 2. Thou grantest pardon through thy love; thy grace alone availeth. Our works could ne'er our guilt remove; yea, e'en the best life faileth. For none may boast themselves of aught, but must confess thy grace hath wrought whate'er in them is worthy. 3. And thus my hope is in the Lord, and not in my own merit; I rest upon his faithful word to them of contrite spirit. That he is merciful and just, here is my comfort and my trust; his help I wait with patience. Topics: Lent Used With Tune: AUS TIEFER NOT

From lowest Depths of Woe

Appears in 51 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 130 Lyrics: 1 From lowest Depths of Woe to God I sent my Cry; 2 Lord, hear my supplicating Voice, and graciously reply. 3 Should'st thou severely judge, who can the Trial bear? 4 But Thou forgiv'st, least we despond, and quite renounce thy Fear. 5 My Soul with Patience waits for Thee the living Lord; My Hopes are on thy Promise built thy never-failing Word. 6 My longing Eyes look out for thy enliv'ning Ray, More duly than the Morning Watch to spy the dawning Day. 7 Let Isr'el trust in God, no Bounds his Mercy knows; The plenteous Source and Spring from whence eternal Succour flows, 8 Whose friendly Streams to us supplies in Want convey; A healing Spring, a Spring to cleanse, and wash our Guilt away.

From deep distress and troubled thoughts

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 105 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 130 Lyrics: From deep distress and troubled thoughts To thee, my God, I raised my cries; If thou severely mark our faults, No flesh can stand before thine eyes. But thou hast built thy throne of grace Free to dispense thy pardons there, That sinners may approach thy face, And hope and love, as well as fear. As the benighted pilgrims wait, And long, and wish for breaking day, So waits my soul before thy gate; When will my God his face display? My trust is fixed upon thy word, Nor shall I trust thy word in vain; Let mourning souls address the Lord, And find relief from all their pain. Great is his love, and large his grace, Through the redemption of his Son; He turns our feet from sinful ways, And pardons what our hands have done. Topics: Despair deliverance from it; Confession of sin, repentance, and pardon; Conscience its guilt relieved; Guilt of conscience relieved; Justification free; Distress relieved; Faith in Divine grace and power; Patience in darkness; Backsliding soul pardoned; Waiting for answer to prayer; Comfort and pardon; Grace pardoning; Pardon plentiful with God

From depths of woe I raise to thee

Author: Martin Luther Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 10 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 130 Lyrics: 1 From depths of woe I raise to thee The voice of lamentation; Lord, turn a gracious ear to me And hear my supplication: If thou iniquities dost mark, Our secret sins and misdeeds dark, O who shall stand before thee? 2 To wash away the crimson stain, Grace, grace alone availeth; Our works, alas! are all in vain; In much the best life faileth: No man can glory in thy sight, All must alike confess thy might, And live alone by mercy. 3 Therefore my trust is in the Lord, And not in mine own merit; On him my soul shall rest, his Word Upholds my fainting spirit: His promised mercy is my fort, My comfort and my sweet support; I wait for it with patience. 4 What though I wait the livelong night, And till the dawn appeareth, My heart still trusteth in his might; It doubteth not nor feareth: Do thus, O ye of Israel's seed, Ye of the Spirit born indeed; And wait till God appeareth. 5 Though great our sins and sore our woes His grace much more aboundeth; His helping love no limit knows, Our utmost need it soundeth. Our Shepherd good and true is he, Who will at last his Israel free From all their sin and sorrow. Amen.
