Psalm 146

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.330 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: Psalm 146 First Line: Praise ye the Lord, my heart shall join Lyrics: Praise ye the Lord, my heart shall join In work so pleasant, so divine; Now, while the flesh is mine abode, And when my soul ascends to God. Praise shall employ my noblest powers, While immortality endures; My days of praise shall ne'er be past, While life, and thought, and being last. Why should I make a man my trust? Princes must die and turn to dust; Their breath departs, their pomp, and power, And thoughts, all vanish in an hour. Happy the man whose hopes rely On Isr'el's God; he made the sky, And earth, and seas, with all their train, And none shall find his promise vain. His truth for ever stands secure; He saves th' oppressed, he feeds the poor; He sends the lab'ring conscience peace, And grants the pris'ner sweet release. The Lord hath eyes to give the blind; The Lord supports the sinking mind; He helps the stranger in distress, The widow and the fatherless. He loves his saints, he knows them well, But turns the wicked down to hell: Thy God, O Zion! ever reigns; Praise him in everlasting strains. Topics: Goodness of God; Souls in separate state; Creatures no trust in them; Mercies and truth of God; Afflicted and tempted, supported; Truth grace, and protection; Princes vain; Trust in the creatures vain; Faithfulness Of God; God goodness and truth; God kind to his people; God worthy of all praise Languages: English

My Soul her Song shall raise

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #CXLVI (1767) Scripture: Psalm 146 Lyrics: 1 My Soul her Song shall raise, The LORD of Host to praise, For whilst I my Breath enjoy, This Tribute I will bring, And daily Praises sing, In triumphant Songs of Joy. 2 On Princes ne'er depend, For they cannot defend, Nor in Danger Help supply; Depriv'd of Breath, they must Return again to Dust, And with them their Thoughts shall die. 3 How highly bless'd are they, Who with Devotion pray, Unto Jacob's GOD for Aid; He form'd the Heav'n and Earth, And to the Sea gave Birth, Nor forgets his Promise made. 4 When Men the Poor oppress, He doth their Wrongs redress, And the Hungry he doth feed; Doth Pris'ners Chains unbind, Give Sight unto the Blind, Whilst they walk from Darkness freed. 5 The Weak and Fall'n he rears, GOD for the Righteous cares, And the Stranger doth defend; The weeping Widow's Cause His tender Pity draws, Helpless Babes on him depend. 6 GOD shall the Wicked slay, In their unrighteous Way, But o'er Sion he is King; From Age to Age his Reign Shall ever sure remain; To the LORD loud Praises sing. O praise the Lord, and thou my Soul

Hymnal: A New Version of the Psalms of David #CXLVI (1760) Scripture: Psalm 146 Lyrics: 1,2 O praise the Lord, and thou, my Soul, for ever bless his Name: His wond'rous Love, while Life shall last, my constant Praise shall claim. 3 On Kings, the greatest Sons of Men, let none for Aid rely; then cannot save in dang'rous Times, nor timely Help apply 4 Depriv'd of Breath, to Dust thy turn, and there neglected lie, And all their Thoughts and vain Designs together with them die. 5 Then happy he, who Jacob's God for his Protector takes; Who still, with well-plac'd Hope, the Lord his constant Refuge makes. 6 The Lord, who made both Heav'n and Earth, and all that they contain, Will never quit his stedfast Truth, nor make his Promise vain. 7 The poor opprest, from all their Wrongs are eas'd by his Decree; He gives the hungry needful Food, and sets the Pris'ners free. 8 By Him the blind receive their Sight, the weak and fall'n He rears: With kind Regard and tender Love he for the righteous cares. 9 The Strangers He preserves from Harm, the Orphan kindly treats, Defends the Widow, and the Wiles of wicked Men defeats. 10 The God, that does in Sion dwell, is our eternal King; From Age to Age his Reign endures, let all his Praises sing.
