Author: W. K. Hymnal: The Whole Booke of Psalmes #61 (1640) Publication Date: 1640 First Line: Praise ye the Lord, for he is good Lyrics: 1 Praise ye the Lord, for he is good, his mercy dures for aye: 2 Who can expresse his noble acts, or all his praise display? 3 They blessèd are that judgement keep, and justly do alway: With favour of thy people (Lord) remember me, I pray. 4 And with thy saving health (O Lord) vouchsafe to visit me: That I the great felicity of thine elect may see. 5 And with thy peoples joy I may a joyfull mind possesse: And may with thine inheritance a glorying heart expresse. 6 Both we and eke our fathers all, have simned every one: We have committed wickednesse, and lewdly we have done. 7 The wonders great which thou (O Lord) hast done in Egypt s land: Our fathers, though they saw them all, yet did not understand. Nor yet thy mercies multitude did keep in thankfull mind: But at the sea, yea, the red sea, rebelled most unkind. 8 Neverthelesse he saved them for honour of his Name That he might make his power knowne and spread abroad his fame. 9 The red sea he did then rebuke, and forthwith it was dry'd: And as in wildernesse, so through the deep he did them guide. 10 He sav'd them from the cruell hand of their despitefull foe: And from the enemies hand he did deliver them also. The second Part: 11 The waters their oppressours whelm'd, not one was left alive: 12 Then they believ'd his word, & praise in song they did him give. 13 But very soon unthankfully his works they clean forgot: And for his counsell and his will they did neglect to wait. 14 But lusted in the wildernesse, with fond and greedy lust: And in the desart tempted God, the stay of all their trust. 15 And then their wanton minds desire he suffer'd them to have: But wasting leanenesse therewithall unto their soules he gave. 16 Then when they lodged in their tents, at Moses they did grutch: Aaron the holy of the Lord so did they envy much. 17 Therefore the earth did open wide, and Dathan did devoure: And all Abirams company did cover in that houre. 18 In their assembly kindled was a hot consuming fire: And wasting flame did then burn up the wicked in his ire. 19 Upon the hill of Horeb they an idoll calfe did frame: And there the molten image they did worship of the same. 20 Into the likenesse of a Calfe which feedeth on the grasse, Thus they their glory turn'd and all their honour did deface; 21 And God their onely Saviour unkindly they forgot: Which many great and mighty things in Egypt land had wrought. The third Part. 22 And in the land of Ham for them most wondrous works had done: And by the red sea dreadfull things Perform-ed long agone. 23 Therefore for their so shewing them forgetfull and unkind: To bring destruction on them all he purpos'd in his mind: Had not his chosen Moses stood before him in the break To turn his wrath left he on them with slaughter should him wreak. 24 They did despise the pleasant land, that he behight to give: Yea and the words that he had spoke they did no whit believe. 25 But in their tents with grudging heart they wickedly repin'd: Nor to the voice of God the Lord did give an hark'ning mind. 26 Therefore against them lifted he his strong revenging hand: Them to destroy in wildernesse, ere they should see the land. 27 And to destroy their seed among the nations with his rod: And through the countries of the world to scatter them abroad. 28 To Baal Peor then they did and joyne themselves also: And ate the offerings of the dead so they forsook him tho. 29 Thus with their own inventions his wrath they did provoke: And in his sore inkindled wrath the plague upon them broke. 30 But Phineas stood up with zeal the sinners vile to slay: And judgement he did execute, and then the plague did stay. The fourth Part. 31 It was imputed unto him for righteousness that day, And from thenceforth so counted is from race to race, I say. 32 At waters eke of Meribah they did him angry make: Yea, so far forth that Moses then was punish'd for their sake. 33 Because they vex'd his spirit so sore, that in impatient heat His lips spake unadvisedly, his fervour was so great. 34 Nor as the Lord commanded them they slew the people tho: 35 But were among the heathen mix'd, and learn'd their works also. 36 And did their idols serve which were their ruine and decay: 37 To fiends their sons and daughters they they offer up and slay: 38 Yea with unkindly murdering knife the guiltlesse blood they spilt: Yet their own sons and daughters blooud without all cause of guilt. Whom they to Canaan idols then offred with wicked hand: And so with bloud of innocents defiled was the land. 39 Thus they were stained with the works of their own filthy way: And with their own inventions a whoring they did stray. 40 Therefore against his people was the Lords wrath kindled sore: And even his own inheritance he did abhorre therefore. 41 Into the hands of heathen men he gave them for a prey: And made their foes their :ords, whom they were forced to obey. The fift Part: 42 Yea and their hatefull enemies opprest them in their land: And they were humbly made to stoope as subjects to their hand. 43 Full oftentimes from thrall had he delivered them before: But with their counsels they to wrath provok'd him evermore. Therefore they by their wickednesse were brought full low to lie: 44 Yet when he saw them in distresse. he hearkened to their cry. 45 He cal'd to mind his covenant, which he to them had swore: And by his mercies multitude repented him therefore. 46 And favour he them made to find, before the sight of those That led them captive from their land, when erst they were their foes. 47 Save us O Lord that art our God, save us (O Lord) we pray: And from among the heathen folk, Lord gather us away. 48 That we may spread the noble praise of thy most holy Name: That we may glory in thy praise, and sounding of thy fame. 49 The Lord the God of Israel be blest for evermore: Let all the people say Amen. praise ye the Lord therefore. O praise the Lord, for he is good

Hymnal: A New Version of the Psalms of David #244 (1754) Publication Date: 1754 Lyrics: 1,2 O praise the Lord, for he is good, his Mercies ne'er decay: That his kind Favours ever last let thankful Isr'el say. 3,4 Their Sense of his eternal Love, let Aaron's House express; And that it never fails, let all that fear the Lord, confess. 5 To God I made my humble Moan, with Troubles quite opprest; And he releas'd me from my Straits, and granted my Request. 6 Since therefore God does on my Side so graciously appear, Why should the vain Attempts of Men possess my Soul with Fear? 7 Since God with those that aid my Cause vouchsafes my Part to take, To all my Foes, I need not doubt, a just Return to make. 8,9 For better 'tis to trust in God, and have the Lord our Friend, Than on the greatest human Pow'r for Safety to depend. 10,11 Tho' many Nations closely leagu'd, did oft beset me round; yet by his boundless Pow'r sustain'd, I did their Strength confound. 12 They swarm'd like Bees, and yet their Rage was but a short-liv'd blaze; For whilst on God I still rely'd, I vanquish'd them with Ease. 13 When all united press'd me hard, in hopes to make me fall; The Lord vouchsaf'd to take my part, and sav'd me from them all. 14 The Honour of my strange Escape to him alone belongs; He is my Saviour and my Strength, he only claims my Songs. 15 Joy fills the Dwelling of the Just, whom God has sav'd from Harm; For wond'rous Things are brought to pass by his Almighty Arm. 16 He, by his own resistless Pow'r, has endless Honour won; The saving Strength of his right Hand, amazing works has done. 17 God will not suffer me to fall, but still prolongs my Days; That by declaring all his works I may advance his Praise. 18 When God has sorely me chastiz'd, till quite of Hopes bereav'd, His Mercy from the Gates of Death my fainting Life repriev'd. 19 Then open wide the Temple Gates to which the Just repair, That I may enter in and praise my great Deliv'rer there. 20,21 Within those Gates of God's Abode to which the Righteous press, Since thou hast heard, and set me safe, thy holy Name I'll bless. 22,23 That which the Builders once refus'd, is now the Corner Stone. This is the wond'rous Work of God, the Work of God alone. 24,25 This Day is God's; let all the land exalt their chearful Voice; Lord, we beseech thee, save us now, and make us still rejoice. 26 Him that approaches in God's Name, let all th' Assembly bless; "We that belong to God's own House "have wish'd you good Success." 27 God is the Lord, through whom we all both Light and Comfort find; Fast to the Altar's Horns with Cords the chosen Victim bind. 28 Thou art my Lord, O God, and still I'll praise thy holy Name; Because thou only art my God, I'll celebrate thy Fame. 29 O then with me give Thanks to God, who still does gracious prove; And let the Tribute of our Praise be endless as his Love. [2 Part] 10 All nations round environ'd me, design'd my fatal fall; But in JEHOVAH's mighty name I overcame them all. 11 They compass'd me, again, again, and try'd my utter fall; But in JEHOVAH's mighty name I did subdue them all. 12 Like angry bees they round me swarm'd, rag'd like a thorny flame; Yet quenched and destroyed were, but in JEHOVAH's name. 13 When they push'd hard to beat me down, JEHOVAH helped me. 14 The mighty JAH my strength, my song, and saving help is He. 15 In tents of righteous men is heard the voice of health and joy: The Lord's right hand gives mighty strength and works most mightily, 16 JEHOVAH by his mighty pow'r advances them on high: The Lord's right hand gives mighty strength and works most mightily. [3 Part] 17 I shall not die, but longer live, and gratefully declare The works of our almighty JAH, how wonderful they are. 18 For JAH hath sorely me chastiz'd, till just of life bereav'd: But kindly from the gates of death, my fainting life repriev'd. 19 O set wide open now to me the gates of righteousness; And I will enter them, and there the praise of JAH confess. 20 This gate, JEHOVAH's blessed gate, into his house doth lead: The righteous love to enter in; and entring in are glad. 21 Among these righteous ones I'll be and praise on Thee bestow; For Thou hast heard me, and to Thee I my salvation owe. 22 The stone the builders did despise, and utterly disclaim, Is now the chief and corner stone, which bares up all the frame. 23 This work JEHOVAH's mighty pow'r hath brought to pass alone; And we in great amazement stand to see what He hath done. [4 Part 24 This is the great and blessed day the LORD himself hath made; And we will all therein rejoyce, and be exceeding glad. 25 JEHOVAH we now Thee beseech SALVATION TO AFFORD: We humbly Thee entreat now send prosperity, O LORD! 26 He that comes in JEHOVAH's name O let him blessed be. Out of JEHOVAH's house to you, a blessing wish do we. 27 God is JEHOVAH, who to us hath made his light to rise: Bind therefore to his altar's horns with cords, our sacrifice. 28 Thou art my God, and I'll proclaim for evermore thy praise: Thou art my God, and thy great name my thankful song shall raise, 29 O to JEHOVAH give ye thanks; immensely good is He, Because his mercy doth endure ev'n to eternity. O praise the Lord, for he is good

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #118 (1789) Publication Date: 1789 Lyrics: 1 O praise the Lord, for he is good, His mercies ne'er decay: That his kind favours ever last Let thankful Isr'el say. 2 Their sense of his eternal love, Let Aaron's house express; And that it never fails, let all that fear the Lord confess. 3 To God I made my humble moan, With troubles quite opprest; And he releas'd me from my straits, And granted my request. 4 Since therefore God does on my side so graciously appear, Why should the vain attempts of men Possess my soul with fear? Part II. 5 The Lord appears my helper now, Nor is my faith afraid What all the sons of earth can do, Since heav'n affords its aid. 6 'Tis safer, Lord, to hope in thee And have my God my friend, Than trust in men of high degree, And on their truth depend. 7 'Tis thro the Lord my heart is strong, In him my lips rejoice; While his salvation is my song, How cheerful is my voice! 8 Like angry bees, they girt me round; When God appears they fly; So burning thorns with crack'ling sound, Make a fierce blaze. and die. 9 Joy to the saints and peace belongs; The Lord protects their days: Let Isr'el tune immortal songs To his Almighty grace. Part III. 10 Lord, thou hast heard thy servant cry And rescu'd from the grave; Now shall he live: (and none can die, If God resolve to save.) 11 Thy praise more constant than before, Shall fill his daily breath; Thy hand, that hath chastis'd him sore Defends him still from death. 12 Open the gates of Sion now, For we shall worship there; The house where all the righteous go Thy mercy to declare. 13 Amongst th' assemblies of thy saints Our thankful voice we raise; There we have told thee our complaints, And there we speak thy praise. Part IV. 14 Behold the sure foundation stone Which God in Sion lays, To build our heav'nly hopes upon, And his eternal praise. 15 Chosen of God to sinners dear, And saints adore the name, They trust their whole salvation here, Nor shall they suffer shame. 16 The foolish builders, scribe and priest, Reject it with disdain; Yet on this Rock the church shall rest, And envy rage in vain. 17 What tho' the gates of hell withstood? Yet must this building rise: 'Tis thy own work, Almighty God, And wond'rous in our eyes. Part V. 18 This is the day the Lord hath made, He calls the hours his own; Let heav'n rejoice, let earth be glad, And praise surround the throne. 19 To day he rose and left the dead; And satan's empire fell; To day the saints his triumphs spread, And all his wonders tell. 20 Hosanna to th' anointed king, To David's holy son, Help us, O Lord, descend and bring Salvation from thy throne. 21 Blest be the Lord, who comes to man With messages of grace: Who comes in God his Father's name To save our sinful race. 22 Hosannah in the highest strains The church on earth can raise; The highest heav'ns in which he reigns, Shall give him nobler praise. Part VI. 23 God is the Lord, through whom we all Both light and comfort find; Fast to the altar's horns with cords The chosen victim bind. 24 Thou art my Lord, O God, and still I'll praise thy holy name; Because thou only art my God, I'll celebrate thy fame. 25 O then with me give thanks to God, who still does gracious prove; And let the tribute of our praise Be endless as his love.
